You know, honestly, I did, too, when I was way too young to realize that girls "weren't supposed" to be with other girls, etc. I just somehow assumed that they were girlfriends, and Patty was just joking around when she flirted with Charlie Brown. Maybe it had something to do with the way that Marcie was always calling Patty "sir"...I could never figure out WTH was up with that.

You know, Peppermint Patty was modeled by Charles Schultz after his cousin Patty, who was very much a tomboy. She was straight, though, and later married and had children. After the character was claimed by lesbian groups to be one of their own, he opted not to reveal the connection, for fear of falsely "outing" her.

I don't think that he ever went out of his way to say the character wasn't gay. But, he never confirmed she was, either. It just kinda took on a life of its own and became "fannon."

True story: this ditzy girl in my year in high school came bursting into my math class once and demanded (of the teacher) "WAS PEPPERMINT PATTY A LESBIAN?" Without missing a beat he replied "I think she was bisexual. So if you take the model Y=x squared + 2x + 3..." and we were all just like "OMG, FULLY AWESOME." I miss high school. ...That's all I have to contribute.

HEE! Comment + icon = win. That class was...non-traditional, to say the least. He was, like, 30-something going on 15. He made fun of us quite regularly, and I often informed him that he was an oversized evil elf. I miss those days.

There are lots and lots of strips in which it's pretty obvious that Peppermint Patty is in love with Charlie Brown. She's in a sort of muddled half-denial about it, but she clearly isn't joking. SHe keeps up at night wondering about how he feels about things.

I'm reading the collected Peantus from the years 1971 and 1972 right now, and it's all over the place. There's even one sequence in which Peppermint Patty is at summer camp and runs into the little red-haired girl there (off-panel, of course, since the little red-haired girls is never shown). And Peppermint Patty actually starts crying because the little red-haired girl is so pretty and she feels so plain and she's sure no-one will ever love her as much as "Chuck" loves the little red-haired girl (she knows he does because he's always talking about her).

It was very emotional and I felt pretty bad for her. ;_; I actually got a bit wibbly, reading it. And much as I love Peanuts that doesn't happen very often.

Marcie's stated out plain that she loves Charlie Brown as well ("I love Charlie! I think he's real neat!"), but that's not something that's come up very often in the strip. Frankly I think Peppermint Patty is more important to her.

Of course, none of that means they can't be bi, or that their relationship isn't very close, sweet and totally awesome no matter what label fits on it. <333
