You know, Peppermint Patty was modeled by Charles Schultz after his cousin Patty, who was very much a tomboy. She was straight, though, and later married and had children. After the character was claimed by lesbian groups to be one of their own, he opted not to reveal the connection, for fear of falsely "outing" her.

I don't think that he ever went out of his way to say the character wasn't gay. But, he never confirmed she was, either. It just kinda took on a life of its own and became "fannon."

That's actually really cool that he didn't confirm one way or another. I imagine a number of creators would want to nip that in the bud.
