OP HERE.

I wasn't just talking about Chekov. I was talking about how people keep treating Anton Yelchin like a little kid.

He's an adult now.

Anton Yelchin has a look. He gets cast by that look. His agents are going to try to push that look, and he will be paid and fed by this look. It's good for him that his fans are buying and swooning for this look. You think he's a handsome man, that's cool for you, but that's not what casting agents see, obviously, and it's not what the majority of his fans see.

This.

I respect Anton Yelchin as an actor (and he did a decent job in Terminator) but before this, almost *all* of his roles were typecast as young, innocent, naive. You can't really blame people for seeing him the same way. It's like expecting people to think of Vin Diesel as anything *other* than macho and thuggy.

And yes, yes, I know. IRL they may be different. I understand what you're saying about his characterization. But until he begins to do more roles that break away from what he's typecast as (such as what he did in Terminator), and grows into his manhood, you'll be hard pressed to find other people describing him as any other way.

(And--seriously? He's born in 1989? I'd thought that he just *looked* young. Damn, I feel old.)

And honestly, for the role Kyle Reese played in that installment -- they needed someone who would grab the audience within the first few moments of his appearance, and not with his manly ways. We had to be SCARED for him when he was captured/hunted. They wanted someone with big eyes, an edge of vulnerability, the viewers had to want for him to be rescued. And I mean, having that is PURE GOLD in Hollywood, DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR ANTON OP. he's making bank.

if it helps, and it probably doesn't, the image you used doesn't make me think of him as a little kid at all *this post is pedobear approved lol*.

But seriously, 17 is not a little kid--it's also not a masterful man. He is a hot young thing. He does not yet have full adult *presence*.

I kind of understand this. Actually, I really understand this. I have a friend who used to get the "OMG she's so adorable!" thing all the time, and I distinctly remember her getting pissed off and ranting about it one time, because she didn't want people to pinch her cheek and call her adorable. She wanted to be treated like a young woman, not a kitten.

I was kind of annoyed that she was mad about it, but then I started to get that "aww how cute" thing too, and I learned that it's annoying as fuck. I'd rather not be complimented than be told I look like a doll. I'm an adult, not a pet. I do not want to be cooed over or spoken to like I'm a child.

Sorry for the rant, but God that's frustrating. So, yes, I understand.

Speaking as someone who's 22 but who frequently gets taken for 15...THIS. People think I'm a cute little girl instead of a grown ass woman. Annoying as hell.

It's positively infuritating- until you learn how to work it. I'm 15 but look 12 and keep getting compared to a porcelain doll (blonde ringlets, pale skin and everything, even the mouth). 15 is the age when you really start wanting to become your own person and be treated as an adult, which is pretty difficult when you don't look like one. I've spent the majority of my life so far having people not take me seriously because of appearance, so I have rather extensive experience.

Essentially, there are two options:
1) Red lipstick (adult/sophisticated connotations)
2) Use youthful, innocent features to subtly manipulate people into doing what you want

The options can also be combined/alternated for maximum effect in different situations.

*Shrug* I know it probably sounds rather defeatist, but as they say: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em (and then proceed to beat them at their own game).
