You can be jail bait and still be professional. It's about your age, not your bearing. I can understand your frustration about people making him act too young, though.

What's so wrong with calling him cute? I'd say he's pretty adorable. I don't... really see him as being sexy, though. I guess it's just a viewpoint thing.

To be honest I can understand this version of Chekov having some sort of naivety and innocent but most of that is depending on his background. If, because he has shown talent, his parents have pushed him to be all that he can building up to him going into Star Fleet early then he could very well be this guy who has all of this knowledge but slightly bellow average real life understanding for his age. Not the biggest problem in the world but is going to affect his actions or how he approaches something from time to time.

Otherwise, yeah he's seventeen. :/

that's a good fic but jesus christ at people acting like it's OMG SO OBNOXIOUS AND SILLY to write him as naive.

He's 17 years old. There is going to be a level of inexperience and I'm sorry but "Pavel Chekov has never seen himself as a child. Possessing a superior intellect at an early age, paired with a thirst for knowledge and understanding, he’s often felt disconnected from the strange, youthful body he inhabits." seems way more over the top, stiff, and disconnected from the little we got of the character than the "inexperienced virgin" fandom's logically concluded. That reads more like Spock.

Who the fuck says that at 17? Anton said he specifically played Chekov to as full of youthful, fun energy. You know, like the original youthful, fun Chekov.

I think he's cute and he's actually a jailbait in the movie (I mean, he is underage, after all), but I undestand your point and kinda agree with you.

I hate how must of the ships seems to see him as a freaking lolita. He's not. He's young, yes, but he's not some kind of delicate princess, fragible and naive and stuff. He's a genius, goddammit! He's at the best starship at the age of seventeen, so, I think he's pretty mature and not loli-lol at all. :p

That is a very sexy pic, but he is cute too! You can be both cute and sexy. Also, he is underage in US society, so people are going to say 'jail bait' unless we're told he isn't.

There's a long tradition of TOS Trek novels where the assumption is that people go to Starfleet Academy earlier than 18, maybe around 15, and that the Federation is a society where adulthood is earlier than 18 in the TOS period...and that Chekov started early...but most people don't know that if they're new to the fandom.

Just because he's a man doesn't mean he can't be adorable. He's my age and I call him adorable. I call men in thier 30's/40's/50's/etc. adorable if I find the adjective applicable. I can't help that I don't usually find men "hot" or "sexy." I'm more attracted to "cute." :c

I agree, however, that having him act too young in fics/RPs would understandably get annoying. I mean, he had some childlike qualities in both the movie and the television show, but that doesn't mean he's naive.

I understand about the characterisations. I think at times people go over the top - the stuffed rabbit comes to mind - but then again all characters suffer indignities at the hands of writers. But there are good Chekov fics out there, too; perhaps we just need a while for the dust to settle and more people to start delving a little more deeply into the characters. :)

Also, is there any way you could direct me towards that picture you used? Because it's wonderful, and I haven't seen it yet on my trawls for Chekov shots :)

I think I know what you mean! I was actually sitting there in the theatre thinking that it was a bit of a shame that all (some) of the fangirls were like "DAMN, I'D HIT THAT LIKE THE MIGHTY HAMMER OF THOR" with Chris Fine/ZQ/Karl Urban/etc, but with AY they're just like "awww, adorable little fake!Russian!" There is admittedly tons of Checkov porn, but I still see your point.
