Photos of photo ID?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-05 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I work for a local government and in the last couple years, tons of people (okay, not tons, but) have tried to use a picture of their photo ID saved on their phone when we ask for ID. Mostly I'd say they're 30s on down; any older and people just say they left their ID at home/in another wallet/lost their documentation/whatever.

Where are people actually able to use a photo of their ID for anything? There's one country in the entire world that has an official digital government ID as even an option; it's Brazil.

And even aside from government offices, banks won't accept a photo of an ID, cops would laugh (and ticket you), bars would be opening themselves up for so much legal shit, ditto tattoo parlors/liquor stores etc.

What's going on? Is it a pandemic thing that people didn't realize doesn't apply in-person?

Maybe!
My state has an official app where you can put all your info in and it acts as an ID. What separates it from just a picture is ittle animated flower like the holographic bits on a real ID.

I work at a gas station and we have to scan the IDs by hand as well as verifying them visually and tangibly. SO MANY PEOPLE GET MAD ABOUT THE SCANNING. And there's ALWAYS someone trying to show me a photo on their phone. Like NO THAT'S NOT HOW THIS WORKS THAT'S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS...

Sorry, this literally comes up at least once a shift for me. WHERE can you use a photo on your phone instead of a real ID??

AYRT--from the reactions, either an alternate dimension (when they act confused) or entitled shithead land (when they get mad.) Idk either but it bugs me so much.

And like, 99% of the time at my work giving staff your ID is--we're the most low stakes possible government employees who might ever ask to look at it; we can't issue tickets or arrest anyone, shut off your utilities, deny you a new license, whatever. We can't even stop you buying gas.

The most we can do is tell you you can't check out books today.

It's a valid way to identify oneself at medical offices in Massachusetts!
