To be honest, I don't find the romance very compelling in the novel because you don't really see much from Lan Wangji's perspective, nor do you really see inside his head at all. You're just told that the romance exists and it's super powerful, which is... yeah, not great writing. But it clearly works for a lot of people.

The Untamed improved upon it because at least you got more of a perspective from both characters, despite censorship issues. They're a highly unlikely match for sure, but that was pretty much the point. Only the two actors sold it for me, and it helped that so much of it was done in glances and unspoken exchanges rather than (IMO) the author's awkward af sex scenes and clumsy declarations of love/lust.

+1 the cast and crew made the details do the work where they couldn't SHOW
