I also hate them. No amount of adhd/autism solidarity uwu~ posts can get me past how insufferable they are together.

Like...i'm novel only but it's not written in a way that makes any bit of their romance compelling to me. LWJ's side comes off as 'cult baby gets sexually obsessed with the first hot guy who tells him no, transfers his culty mindset from The Rules Are Always Right to Wei Ying is Always right, and therefore transforms into the Perfect Stoic Romance Dom Lead who just is always 100% on the main character's side with absolutely no need to discuss it or learn from each other or compromise.' It's a fantasy of having someone adore you absolutely without you having to admit anything or ask for it or work for it - they just worship you for some other shit you did that was Unspeakably Heroic while you were having a breakdown and had nothing to do with them, and now you get a rich sugar daddy with a giant dick who'll do anything for you. And on Wei Wuxian's side, it comes off as a guy so fucking desperate not to address his trauma that he'd rather just marry this guy and become his pillow princess and never deal with his shit.

YES I KNOW this is a maximally uncharitable reading, but it's a sincere one, this is fandomsecrets, the place for salty takes the majority disagrees with. Admittedly I hated them more gradually over time due to fandom oversaturation but just, I dislike them separate and they're even worse together. I rEALLY don't ship them with anyone else because everyone else deserves better.

tldr i feel you OP. and the smug bitches up top can suck licorice. y'all get the whole freaking fandom and you have to be smarmy here too? fuck off

From someone who is unfamiliar with this show/novel - you might say that's an uncharitable interpretation of the ship but to me you've just written the best damn ship manifesto in the world. Oof, I do love me some unhealthily unconditional devotion in my ships. I'm gonna have to check this out.

Wow. Tell me you didn't understand it, without saying you didn't understand it.

This is actually more charitable than I would be. You've hit the issues with their romance right on the head. Especially with LWJ's side, he's obviously supposed to come off as true love standing with WWX when no one else will, but it's painfully obvious that he's putting WWX on a pedestal and it's this perfect version he's in love with. And then there's the whole "jealousy is sexy" trope going on with him that's really off-putting to me. And while we get to spend a lot of time in WWX's head, his attraction to LWJ never seems to go beyond physical. It doesn't help that, in the novel at least, they don't really have any chemistry.

Except that's not really true -he did in fact criticize WWX for his methods and tries but ultimately fails to get him off the self-destructive path he's on. One of the reasons he is so overly indulgent is because he actually didn't manage to stand by WWX's side against the adversity he faced and lost him because of that (in his own eyes, at least).

Like, I agree that the romance isn't the perfect flawless love story a lot of fans portray it as but that doesn't mean it's as one-dimensional as the people who dislike it like to portray it.

THANK YOU. This, honestly. The whole point of LWJ's character arc is realizing that blindly following the laws does not make you righteous, and it's his (at first, unwilling) attraction to and care for WWX that leads him to this understanding of what justice actually is. He figures out after WWX's death that most of the laws are just lip service to true justice and righteousness, and that, even though WWX never met a law he didn't love to break, WWX was the closest to actually fulfilling the purpose of cultivators to protect the common people. So when WWX returns, he's super indulgent and loyal precisely because he knows from experience that A) WWX is a just and righteous man and would never do anything harmful on purpose and B) he has a hard time asking for help, so LWJ must trick him into it by being embarrassingly loving.
