The thing about Percy Weasley which fandom overlooks, is that he was not wrong. His dad was a joke and a buffoon who was dragging the rest of the family down. His younger twin brothers were assholes who caused harm to a lot of people too. If Voldemort hadn't subverted the MoM then Percy would have been completely in the right, and the one who got out. I think he deserves a lot more sympathy from fandom than he gets.

Oh man, yes. The Weasleys are so idolized in the fandom. I like the kids other than the twins, but parents are their own version of awful.

I don’t know if I agree with this interpretation of Arthur, but I’m not against it either. However, I definitely dislike the twins, I always have. Characters like them who are so beloved for being ~hilarious chaotic prankster twins~ have always rubbed me the wrong way. They’re awful shits to me, and I hate the Hitachiin twins from Ouran High School Host Club for the same reasons.

And I used to like Molly well enough, but I saw how awful she could be, and never felt the same way again.

Pranks are only funny when the person being pranked likes it. Back and forth prank wars are cool. But pranking people who don't like being pranked? That's just mean and makes you a bad person.

I agree completely!

That was Dumbledore's blindspot with Snape and James, he saw it as a prank war between two rivals and treated it pretty much as such. He had a blind spot where he couldn't quite bring himself to see it as two students who truly loathed each other to the point of going to war against the other with no holds barred, not until it was too late.

The Weasly twins were actual bullies and yet they were treated like adorable pranksters, that shit was so weird.

Nah, that is exactly Arthur. Don't get me wrong; he is a nice guy and knows what he wants out of his life and his job, and he got it, but it is something dumb and silly in his world (and out of universe too) which would hold his family back if they are seeking out conventional employment. Notice his older kids both have non-conventional employments, and the twins are also non-conventionally employed prior to V's return. His behavior doesn't affect them, it would have affected Ron too if he'd had a normal childhood and wanted to progress to auror without the whole dark lord returns thing happening, but not Ginny. It certainly affected Percy, who even without the whole dark lord factor would probably have had to distance himself from his family to progress or be forced to also see non conventional employment.

That’s a good point!

Anon, I think it sort of depends where in fandom you're hanging out which way opinions of Percy run. Because I found some very solid fanfiction back in the day that would agree with you entirely. I suspect it's been too long for me to be able to find those stories again, or I would try.

But yeah - as a kid, "I could make more money and get more respect, I just don't want to" seemed like an unloving attitude for someone who had seven children, all of whom were shamed for being poor, made do with inadequate school supplies, and were pressured by their family to just suck it up. If it wasn't sheer posturing on Arthur's part, because he very much struck me as a mediocre bungler. And the whole interpersonal dynamic in that family seemed very repellent to me, like no one had any privacy and they were always in each other's way.

When the others took potshots at Percy, generally they were the ones who wound up looking petty to me. I think the story just took advantage of the fact that a lot of people don't want to empathize with an aspiring bureaucrat or a jobsworth.

With what we know now about her Terfyness, it shouldn't surprise us she hates people that just want to keep their heads down and get on in life without being bullied by assholes. Making them the heels of the story is very on brand for Mister Galbraith.
