Worst protagonists in media you love

What media do you love but also think one or more of the protagonists is really terrible or badly written?

Scott McCall wasn't the worst but he was so boring.

He was boring that slowly turned into the worst. I felt bad for the actor, because while he's not amazing the problem with Scott McCall was 100% the bad writing.

Fucking this. Although the actor turned out to be a bit of a dick toward the end, there.....

I actually thought Buffy and Angel were the worst characters of their respective shows. Just both kind of whiny and/or boring.

I agree about Angel. Always found him kind of annoying unless he was Angelus.

Oh, talking about Whedon: I wouldn't say I love Firefly, but I do think Mal was one of the worst parts of the show. His general dickishness got on my nerves from the get-go.

I’ve never really liked the show, and he’s a big part of that. Some other characters got on my nerves, as well as other aspects I didn’t like, plus I thought it was boring. But Mal I found the most insufferable part of the show, I didn’t see how he was supposed to be charming. Just because there was more under the surface doesn’t mean he was written well.

Buffy grew on me over the years.

Angel...never.

Angel the character is just kind of bland and boring, but he's been poisoned by my distaste for David Boreanaz from other shows (I haaaaaaaaate his character on Bones).

I like Buffy thought. She's boring when she's with Angel but fine otherwise.

General Hux from Star Wars. So much wasted potential.

Not really a protagonist, is he?

Right, like are we watching the same star war??

Presumably not, but now I want to know where I can find the anon's Star War sequel trilogy. It might suck less.

Jon Snow was the worst by the end of the show. Granted everyone was but he was especially horrible and boring. Though, his catch phrase "I dun't want it :C" is something we still say in my household.

Re: Worst protagonists in media you love

(Anonymous) 2023-05-12 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, he was so dull. I don't know that he was horrible, but he was supposed to be this saviour figure and he was just a wet blanket.

IDK if anyone else has read this but the narrator of the Terra Ignota series is soo obnoxious. Love lots of other stuff about the series but like half the time I want to slap him. Not for any of the reasons he actually deserves it, just because he's really annoying.

I’m a fan of DC and Marvel comics, and I usually don’t hate a character completely just because they’ve done something to piss me off in one series or issue(unless it continues for a while). Because different writers can make wildly different interpretations of the same character, sometimes at the exact same time as each other. But I find that I can let the bad actions of a character affect whether I like them really fast if I already thought they were boring or annoying.

The protagonists I dislike the most would be Hank Pym and Clint Barton for Marvel. And Oliver Queen, Barry Allen, and Hal Jordan for DC. I like other Flashes, Green Lanterns, and Ant-Men, and I like Kate Bishop(Wyatt McDonald is okay). I also love Roy Harper, and that’s part of why I hate Oliver. I just don’t like these specific characters who happen to bear the names of these heroes.

And I wish the writers and higher ups would stop insisting that these are the specific characters that are the “best” ones to bear the names, and should be the ones to represent the title in every adaptation(even when they have to play fast and loose with the source material just to fit them in with everyone else when they normally wouldn’t belong there). Or that they should be the only ones to take the name as long as they’re writing for the company, even if they have to retcon everything or kill off their successor just to get them back in the mantle. Just because they were the ones wearing the mantle when they were kids, and everything was ~so much better then~. Especially in regards to Barry Allen and Hal Jordan. Wally West and Jay Garrick are way better Flashes, and John Stewart and Kyle Rayner are much better Green Lantern protagonists. Scott Lang is also way better than Hank Pym, but he doesn’t seem to get treated as badly as Barry and Hal’s successors.

That’s all just my opinion, obviously.

Sabriel, from the Abhorsen series. I love the world building and other characters, but Sabriel herself has no personality. She just does things like a robot (and not the kind that secretly has a soul). Lirael can be annoying, but at least she has a personality.

The same author has a lesser known series that's even worse with the Personality-less Protagonist Problem, Keys to the Kingdom. Sabriel's flatness is endurable, Arthur's was so intense I actually hated him after a few books.
