And even in supernatural universes, usually the male characters look plenty athletic. Why is it only female superheroes who don't need muscle?

Probably because the men who wrote these stories and design the characters feel it's more important for female characters to look PRETTY in a conventional, generic appeal sort of way. No big muscles, because a lot of men find that emasculating.

Oh that's absolutely why. And it drives me crazy. Also, speaking as a bi woman, muscular women can be really hot too. More of them, please.

tbh Hunter X Hunter has an interesting take on it with a character named Biscuit. She's great. She appears like a delicate little girl who wears frilly dresses and who can yeet people without effort but she's actually a huge, buff woman in her fifties who uses a magical masseuse to hide all of that because she likes looking young and innocent but also because it's a massive trump card in battle if all people see is a frilly little girl.

Agreed! Biscuit is great, and her subversion of expectations is played very cleverly!
