I think I have to disagree, anon. "Trio" doesn't mean "the most plot-central characters are all equally compatible and into each other," it just means these are the people the camera compulsively follows around. And, strictly speaking, it's usually more like one main character with two supporting characters orbiting them: Luke in the OT, Anakin in the PT, and Rey in the ST.

Perhaps you're thinking of something more like a polyamorous triad.
