I wish more people could understand that saying a character is badly written isn't the same thing as saying the character is bad. Bad writing can ruin what is otherwise a perfectly good character!

IMO a badly-written character is worse than a bad character, because with a badly-written character you can see the potential they could have had if they were in the hands of a good writer. A bad character is just bad.

I disagree because any character "could have" been good in the hands of a good writer. If every badly written character had the potential to be well written, then "badly written" would be meaningless. A badly written character is the same as a bad character because who they were written by matters.

Eh. There are definitely characters I feel even a good writer couldn't salvage without rewriting them from the ground up because the character concept is just bad. There's a difference between that and a character where the concept is fine but the author fumbled the actual writing of the character in the narrative.
