Seriously. Gossip mags are even worse, because at least, generally, fans a) acknowledge it's fiction and b) like and respect the individuals being written about. And, you know, they aren't all over the check-out aisle.

You said what I was gonna say, but you said it with Zefron <3. EVEN BETTER.

[identity profile] ohourheartsbeat.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY. :D

(Anonymous) 2009-06-07 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So if I hate gossip mags it's ok for me to hate RPF?

Yay!

[identity profile] snackbreak.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OP is just calling hypocrite on gossip mag lovers that hate RPF. It does not follow that that the right to hate on RPF is contingent upon one's feelings about gossip mags in general though.

Personally, I don't care who wants to hate RPF, it sure as heck isn't going to change my fandom life, but the secret is still pretty funny.

[identity profile] misty-days.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm.. now that you mention it. Yeah, agreed.
Trashy gossip magazines and RPF are pretty much the same things.

imo, gossip mags are worse though

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, point me to the gossip magazines with graphic descriptions of two guys fucking. Because I am so there.

I like RPF, but really, they're not the same.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-07 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Because there is no RPF which doesn't have guys fucking?

Obviously they are not exactly the same thing, but both of them feature devoting possibly-somewhat-creepy amounts of attention to imagining what celebrities might be doing in their personal lives. It's not that much of a stretch to call them approximately the same thing.

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean to imply that all RPF is slash, but if there is a gossip magazine that prints such things I'd better know about it, dammit.

Yes, but RPF might actually be well written and entertaining. And it's usually way better as fapping material.

This.

One could argue the toss about sports RPFs vs sports mags, though... Idk, sports is the only RPF fandom I follow.

[identity profile] applegrass-wolf.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, agreed! Except for the fact gossip mags are worse.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen sister friend.

Also, gossip mags represent themselves as the truth. RPF does not. And I don't think the "graphic sex" has anything to do with it.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Interesting point! I think most RPF is more accurate than those mags, really. :P

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, that is an awesome point, OP.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
... And then they say that writing fic will never pay off. These things are filled with pages upon pages... of nothing but Real People Fic-prompts! AND THEY ARE PAID FOR IT!

Sometimes they can be similiar, but saying you have to like RPF if you like gossip mags is BS.

Gossiping about pictures of Angelina Jolie at the beach is a bit different about writing a detailed fic in which Michael J. Fox and Hugh Jackman survive the apocalypse, try to fight off the resulting zombies and then, upon discovering that there is no hope, have hot end of the world sex.

[identity profile] snackbreak.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Gossiping about Angelina Jolie at the beach is freaking stalker creepy. Bring me the zombie!apocalypse fic any day! LOL

Yes, but that's not the intent of the secret. OP is saying that gossip mags are professionally written RPF, therefore it's hypocritical to enjoy them while bashing amateur RPF in general. There's a difference between taking active interest in a certain form of fiction and tolerating it with the understanding that it has inherent similarities to something that you find acceptable.

I assume the point you wanted to make is that RPF is a billion times better than gossip mags, because your hypothetical story sounds awesome.

That is a good point that I hadn't considered. I'll give you that.
I detest gossip mags, but still flip through them from time to time.

The mags are definitely more harmful to the celebs. As there may be a grain of truth to the articles, and they have candid photos that those people hadn't realized existed.
