It's really hard to disassociate character names from actor names. Except Hugh Grant, he's just... Hugh Grant forever. I was really embarrassed the first time I accidentally called Shatner Denny instead of Kirk. :(

Only if you lack a clear grasp on the concept of fiction.

I'm talking about in general conversation. It's easier for me to come up with "Alan Shore" than "James Spader" because I don't know much about Spader's personal life or any of his life other than what he portrayed in Boston Legal. I don't really want to know much about Spader's personal life.

I'm usually terrible with actor names, but I'm good with their faces, so I'll always express my knowledge of an actor by pointing at the screen and saying something like, "It's Harold Crick!" or summot. This often causes issues, like my inability to see them as any other character. For example, while watching the movie Tape, I couldn't handle the fact that my adorable, quietly manipulative Dr. James Wilson was using the word "Fuck" and smoking pot.

Harrison Ford is one of these actors. I've tried many, many times to learn that his name is fucking HARRISON FORD, damnit, but every time I see him it's either "ZOMG, HAN SOLO!" or "YAY, INDY!" :/ It makes his aging mildly upsetting to me.

I WANT TO SEE WILSON SMOKING POT LOL WHAT

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Then rent Tape! It's actually quite a good movie, if you like that sort of thing (which I do). Its kind of a slower moving plot, and the scenery and actors are very sparse, but it's interesting. And worth watching if only for the very end. The end was great.

This secret is exceptionally sexy. I vote for more secrets with Harrison Ford, no matter if he's related or not.

On topic, for me it's the exact opposite. I cannot for the life of me remember characters' names, except for long-running shows, so I always end up saying 'the guy that's played by Johnny Depp' or something like that.

TVTropes calls this phenomenon "Role Association (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RoleAssociation)". Read, laugh, say goodbye to the next three hours. :D

[identity profile] kurai007.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He's pretty much just Han Solo for me! <3

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
While I don't do this exactly, I do often find that the first role I see an actor in sticks with me, such that even if the actor is doing a good job portraying a completely different character in another movie/film/whatever, I will occasionally slip and think of him/her as the character I originally associated him/her with. This gets worse if they're not doing a good job or if I just think they're miscast.

The moment in the second Matrix movie when all of a sudden Ted Logan was fighting Agent Elrond was especially troubling.

Hahaha yeeeah, Harrison will always be Indy to me. xD
