And that showing emotions or even *gasp* crying sometimes when overwhelmed by said emotions is not the same as being a weak, whiny ball of fluff. No, not even for female characters. (As we all know, male characters crying = yay softer side! or yay h/c! But female characters crying = STFU WHINY BITCH!)

Oh my God, the struggle in this fandom to get people to see Ianto as someone with FEELINGS AND STUFF and someone who isn't WHINY. People mistook his grief hurt and anger in "Cyberwoman" as emo and whiney. HE WAS LOSING THE WOMAN WHO HE WAS IN LOVE WITH AND WAS MAJORLY CONFLICTED WITH HIS EMOTIONS, WTF. Not emo. CONFLICTED

Seriously. This fandom sometimes makes me make this face far too often

God, yes.

I posted about this on my own journal and someone said that the ability to tell the difference is based on the age (or maturity) of the author. I'm inclined to agree.

Hearing people say things like that really winds me up. I wonder, how would they feel if people were to go up to them when they're upset and tell them "cheer up emo" and stuff like that? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't appreciate it.

I may get brick'd for this, but this is how I feel whenever someone whines about not liking the 5th Harry Potter book, Order of the Phoenix, just because "Harry was such a bitch".

If they didn't like it they didn't like it, I couldn't care less... but I DO care that a vast number of Harry Potter fans seem to write off Harry's emotions in OotP so easily.

Whatever the series and in real life, emotions are much more complex than 'happy' 'sad' 'horny', blahblahblah whatever. It's really sad when people don't think about what the characters are going through.

I agree, too!!

While Janto is widely loved, Ianto remains an underloved character. I think fandom's perception of him as weak and emo and clingy is a big reason for it. But he is the opposite!! Sure he's had some sad times, but he has been through A LOT of crappy stuff in the last few years.

Same goes for the new specials. If the world's children were taken over, you would be a bit "emo" too, fandom!!
