They're a wealthy and technologically advanced nation that's also isolationist and doesn't appear to use its power and wealth to help the countries around it. That on its own isn't great. I don't think it necessarily makes them evil. But if you're trying to take the politics of Wakanda seriously, I think it's something you have to engage with.

If you're trying to take the politics and politics seriously (as in view them like you'd view real-life country) then why on Earth are you watching a Marvel movie to begin with? There are a million other movies and books in other genres that have what you want.

NAYRT

Because that's what fandom does? It takes the media presented and explores it. One of those explorations is "What if this happened in real life?"

I mean, that's what the entire first movie was about. MCU Wakanda absolutely engaged with that idea. Nakia and Killmonger were interventionist, Ramonda, T'Chaka and T'Challa were not, and they changed over the course of the movie.

As someone who hasn't seen the movies, but has heard complaints that they follow the "bad guy is right, but the narrative thinks he's wrong and forces you to hate him by having him kill a puppy" uh, trope... what I gather actually happened is that the bad guy was right and the narrative knew it, and the good guy eventually came to agree with his goals but the bad guy is still not a good person individually? Is that correct?

Only the "good" guy came to learn the value of being a colonizer at the end of the first movie instead of an isolationist. Thank goodness their character died between movies (note I specified character, not actor) so at least we could downgrade to the creepy monarch and their black ops wetwork team, making sure that nobody else was allowed an independent science base or foreign policy she disagreed with.

So... the original bad guy... was a colonizer?

Sorry, I shouldn't have ended on that snark. What I meant was the impression I got was that the bad guys wanted to end the isolationism so their country could share its technology (like the abovementioned cure for cancer) with the world and learn from the world as well. Some people see that as opening a door for colonization, but IMO when you have literal live-saving technology that you're keeping to yourselves, being isolationist rather than "potentially future colonialist via slippery slope" is not a good guy move.

The original bad guy was the invade and conquer type of colonizer, then by the end of the movie T'Challa shifted to being the mercantile colonizer. Both types of colonizer, one worse than the other, but neither ideal. The current ones are just flat out bad guys conducting flat out supremacist incursions though.

So a country is either isolationist or a colonizer? There's no "good" option to be had?

International cooperation would seem to be an ideal middle ground.
