OP to secret maker

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for turning my comment into a secret!

I'm a little less embarrassed this week, though, thanks to CCP getting butthurt over Uncle Roger's jokes and banning him.

Who or what is CCP? What happened there?

Chinese Communist Party, I think. And if the Guardian can be trusted, his social media accounts were cancelled this week, along with some other comedians, on orders from the Chinese government.

Ayrt

That escalated quickly, lol. I thought that was an acronym for some other YouTuber or internet personality, not an authoritarian regime.

Ha, yeah that ... didn't even occur to me, but now that you pointed out the possibility, I can totally see it, and I'm amused. Grudge war. Or, you know, bigger grudge war!

Western governments are just as guilty of it, but it makes them all look really insecure and petty when they can't stand to hear that people think they are implementing wrong-headed policies. None of us want our cell phones to spy on us. None of us like to be told what to think. When they haul off and try to exile a normal person or a comedian from society for having "wrong" opinions, it just makes the most accepted opinion look too fragile to survive criticism.

Chinese Communist Party. They don't take criticism well and they certainly don't like it whenever anyone suggests Taiwan is a country.

LMAO, that's kind of hilarious considering he's previously sucked up to the CCP.

Don't know this comedian from before this secret, but it seemed to me that the skit that got him cancelled was set up in a way that could be acknowledging previous sucking-up. He was saying positive things, at first, but in a tone of voice that was so earnest and with strategic pauses that it made it clear he didn't believe any of that.

Which is, you know, why Taiwanese fans in the audience were dying of laughter when he told them they needed to rejoin the motherland, instead of getting mad at him.

This.

I liked someone's observation that this was his "redemption arc." I hope it remains that.

Don't sweat it. I'm fully Asian and we didn't really make or eat fried rice at home OR at a restaurant. My parents felt it was unhealthy, and anyway the entree was flavorful enough to eat with regular steamed rice. Fried rice only showed up in fancy banquet dinners as the last course, per tradition, and you weren't really supposed to stuff your face with it because that suggested that all the (better, more expensive/elaborate) dishes that came before it weren't enough and your host might be insulted.

Full Asian and I've been making friend rice since I was a kid...I never knew how to make "good" fried rice until a couple years ago lol

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there's your problem, making it from friends and not egg and vegetables!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ToT

AYRT I realized too late my mistake.

Make friends, not cook them.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there some sort of consensus on what makes fried rice "good?"

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if I've learned anything from Uncle Roger-
1) Use a rice cooker
2) Use day old rice
3) Don't add your scallions until the end
4) Refrain from using unnecessary ingredients like chili jam
5) Use vegetable oil, not olive oil
6) DO use MSG
7) Do add egg
8) Use a wok when possible, preferably over an open flame
9) Do research and obtain authentic ingredients if you're trying other types of fried rice
10) If your rice is too wet, you fucked up
11) If your rice is too dry, you fucked up

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. You want to use at least day old rice so that most of the water from cooking it has already evaporated and it will be more crunchy as opposed to soft. You don't want to add the scallions until the end because they're basically a type of onion so if you add them too early, they'll get soft the way regular onion does and a good amount of the flavor will leech out. You don't want to use olive oil because it has a distinct flavor of its own where vegetable oil is much more neutral. A wok is the best because it can be used over high heat, unlike most types of pans.

I see. Thank you both for explaining it to me!
