(Anonymous) 2023-05-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I watch the show "Air Disasters" - I'm guessing the "Mini Air Crash" show you mention is similar to that one - and I really can't recall any stories about crashes based on turbulence, either. I've also learned that most crashes happen during takeoff or landing.
I don't have a phobia of flying, per se, but I'm not super wild about it because I did have kind of a crappy flying experience once (we made it to our destination okay, just one of those flights where it seemed there was always some issue popping up at some point along the trip). Strangely, though, watching that "Air Disasters" show has really helped ease my issues with flying a lot. It really does take a LOT to bring down a flight, and the amount of changes and improvements that have been made over the decades to help make flying safer have really proven to be beneficial in a lot of ways.
I totally understand where watching those kinds of shows may just exacerbate one's fear, though, yeah, 'cause even if you know on an intellectual level that flying is overall a pretty safe form of travel, and even if you know the kinds of efforts that have been made to ensure that's the case...the real life crash stories that do exist are, obviously, still pretty disturbing to hear about, and even fictional ones can be pretty freaky to watch as well.
