I’m so grateful that Tim Roth wasn’t cast as Severus Snape. I love Alan Rickman’s work and he was great, but I don’t develop automatic crushes on his characters. Thankfully, I was able to stay comfortably uninterested in the later books and movies rather than getting involved in the discourse. I fear that if it had been Tim Roth, I would have felt dragged into that whole mess, with an unfortunate sympathy for Snape.

I actually think Tim Roth would have made a great James Potter.

I didn't see Tim Roth as Snape either. I think it wouldn't have worked out well. No offense to him.
His youngest son died in October. :(

I feel this in my heart, OP. Every day of my life I'm haunted by the person I would have become if Tim Roth had played Snape. Let's be best friends.

I've known plenty of fans who love Snape dearly, with and without Alan Rickman, and the assumption that they're immoral compared to anyone else (or that you were spared a terrible fate because you weren't one of them) seems patently absurd to me.

I apologize if my self-deprecation was unclear and implied any disdain towards or belief of immorality resting on the average Snape fan. What I meant for that comment to convey is that, had Tim Roth played Snape, I - an emotionally unstable teenager at the time the HP movies were at peak popularity and cultural relevance, and deeply attached to him already because of the terrible and troubled characters he played in Reservoir Dogs and Rob Roy - would have fully achieved Snapewife levels of madness. Hope this helps, and have a great rest of your day.

That does clarify. I'm sorry if what I said came off as cutting.

I'm one of them and yeah, it's pretty annoying to catch yourself referred to as an "unfortunate Snape sympathizer." I'm aware of his flaws and his good points, still like him as a character--probably the most complex character written in the series (that says more about Jo's writing than anything, though).

Hmm didn't know he was a candidate but Tim Roth would have played a great Snape.

I'm curious who they're going to get for the TV series.

My roommate and I have been listening to the Shrieking Shack a lot lately, and we have reached the conclusion that Alan Rickman gave Snape some dignity and played the version of him that JKR thinks she wrote, but Tim Roth is not afraid to do the most for the worst and probably would have played Snape as he is actually written.
