inspired by the amazing devil secret yesterday

what's a band that you absolutely head over heels crazy about that you feel nobody knows or too few people know?

what's a band that you discovered through fandom?

They're not small, at least I don't think they are, but I found Sick Puppies through a SPN Dean/Cas fanvid years back. It was set to 'All the Same' and I love the song and ended up listening to more music from the band.

I don't know if they're still making songs, as I don't tend to keep up with bands/singers even if I like them, don't know why I just tend to forget about them.

I actually discovered Regina Spektor and Tegan and Sara through fandoms, both from fanvids. I know I've discovered other music through fanvids but those are the two big ones that still stand out to me.

I discovered Hedningarna due to a Sauron fanmix. They are awesome.

Your Favorite Martian

I discovered this band by looking at Transformers videos on Youtube. Turns out one of the singers likes mentioning Megatron and other robots often in his songs.

Too lazy to log in but these are not secrets.

Will Wood
Zeal & Ardor
Rishloo
Amigo the Devil
SKYND (warning, it's music about True Crime and the vids are very graphic.)

Most recently through Fandom, the Living Tombstone.

Ice Nine Kills' Silver Scream albums are all homages to horror movies.

I used to find songs via AMVs like Push It by Garbage.

Not a fandom but Trainspotting got me into Lou Reed (with the use of Perfect Day)

I don't remember how I discovered Core of Soul but I fucking looooved them and still have all their CDs somewhere in storage. I should dig them out and rip them bc I miss listening to them. I have to assume Japanese music licensing hell is why their stuff isn't on Spotify yet (even though the band does have a page there)

I discovered The Magnetic Fields through a fanvid in an old fandom. The vid wasn't great or memorable but I fell in love with the band.

I'm pretty sure at this point in my life, about 80% of the music I'm into now is music I have found through fandom.

To name a few bands:
Wolfsheim (found through a Garashir DS9 fan video)
The Crane Wives (an animatic of OFMD and a Moomins fan-playlist)
The Front Bottoms (an animated fan video for Sally Face)
Glass Animals (through the game Dream Daddy)
Days N Daze (a Sanders Sides fan-playlist)
Set It Off (Markiplier Egos fan videos)
The Mountain Goats (a Tumblr meme and Moral Oral)

I know they’re more popular than ever, and hardly unknown, but I’ve been a massive fan of Gorillaz since the beginning, and I always want them to get appreciation!

As an avid watcher of all things fanvids, from AMVs, MEPs, GMVs, edits of animated and live-action shows, etc., I’ve gotten into so many new artists and bands through fandom. I have a hard time thinking of one specific example, because there’s been so many! That’s a thing with me though, I have difficulty narrowing things down when people ask me about anything I like and think is cool. It has to be something I’m obsessed with like Gorillaz for me to be able to answer. Because otherwise, I either have too many examples to the point where I get overwhelmed trying to think of them, or I actually give examples and get completely carried away.

Not obscure, but I love ASP a lot, and feel like fandom only gets the trailing edge of what he's come up with - where no one else is singing about the theme and therefore one of his songs cross over, like with Zaubererbruder for Loki/Thor AMVs. Which was a perfectly beautiful duet between two male rock stars, so you know, I get it. But he's got many good and inventive and atmospheric songs. Lately I've been listening to Wechselbalg, Werben, and Geh und heb dein Grab aus, mein Freund.

I'm pretty sure I found him through fandom, initially. Ungeschickte Liebesbrief was popular with people vidding The Corpse Bride and other gothy stuff for a while.
