That's a shame. The Wire is an amazing show and deserves a fandom and plenty of fic.

I also think it's a shame that you think it's too much trouble to try to research and write characters as well as you can, no matter what color they are, just because you're afraid of making mistakes and/or having them pointed out to you. You should try and do your best, if the characters speak to you, same as with any writing you do.

...I must admit, I didn't think OP meant that they weren't willing to do the research, or that they were afraid of making mistakes, but that they were afraid of the fact that a lot of nasty people in Racefail essentially said that NO white person could EVER understand a black person's perspective EVER EVER EVER because the world they lived in was not institutionally racist against them - and that OP believed them.

Which I can sympathise with, really; I write black characters in my fandoms - and I always put effort and work into getting into their minds - but I've started writing them less and worrying more about it because I value accuracy and, well, if I can never understand no matter what...then what's the point? I want to do it right. *perfectionist*

YES. I was gutted by the lack of Uriel & Castiel fic in Supernatural because I honestly thought their bickering was adorable and would have loved to see more of it. It bugs me to no end that there're more Alastair and Castiel requests on the kink memes and such despite them having maybe five minutes screen time together in total than there are for Uriel and Castiel who've been in the same boat for centuries as far as we know :X.

Yes yes and yes >_<. I mean, when I first wrote a fic for them, I thought "Hee, maybe this'll get the ball rolling", and... no. And then I wrote another fic for them and thought "And maybe now?", and... no. And then I wrote v. dubious consent porn and thought "Okay, well, this isn't my usual fluff, so maybe now?" and... no.

And then I realised I'd written probably 1/3 to 1/2 of all the Uriel/Castiel fic out there, and I sighed deeply for the fandom.

Do it anyway, anon. Even before Racefail I was terrified of fucking up and revealing my stupid privileged racist fail while RPing Omar, but I really loved the character so I did it anyway. People who had never known the show existed liked him.

Listen to the actors' commentary; read about the research the creators of the show did; research a bit on Baltimore and its projects; then go and write.

Aw yeah. That is pretty much how it was for me too.

(I know some people who've dropped it in the second season, because it does slow down a bit, but it's absolutely worth it--and then after all that, IMO the third and fourth seasons are the show's best.)

If you want to take a lesson away from Race!Fail, then take the suggestion that you do some research first and maybe run your fic by someone else before you post it who you trust to point out problems. And then if someone leaves a review that has some criticism, don't be overly defensive about it.

I've never watched the Wire, but agreeing about being scared of fucking up when writing black characters(or any poc characters for that matter). Except I've been that scared about writing it even before Race!Fail...

Here's what you do:

1.) Treat the characters as you would any other. They are human beings with their own worldviews, dialects, and likely reactions to different situations. Go with the extablished cannon to get the essence of each character.

2.) Create a pseudonym. Write the fic under that pseudonym.

3.) Post the 'fic.

4.) Relax as a non-existant person recieves all the hate-mail for the characters being written "too black" and/or "not black enough." (Possibly both at the same time.)
