Hey, it's fine if you're Reform!

Having read the book I have to say you really aren't in the minority OP. Everyone I know ship them. TV Tropes ships them. The nuns at my school ship them!

Not only that, I'm pretty sure Chaim Potok does as well. Have you read the sequel, The Promise? Not only does Danny marry Reuven's girlfriend, he spends like three chapters freaked out about what Reuven thinks. It's totally hilarious in a depressing angsty bromance way!

Against Judaism because they're both male, or for a further reason? I've not seen it, so I don't know what it's about.

That's what I was thinking. I mean, if eyepatch guy is a Nazi or something that makes it different, but a lot of Jews are pretty okay with the gay. See also: me.

I have a weird thing about Nazi/Jew fiction. ... It's wrong, I know it's wrong, but in situations where the Nazi isn't really a Nazi and stuff and okay I'm not going to even try to justify it.

If it helps, I think Israel had a nice industry going along that theme for a while back in the 50s.

In the book, Robbie Benson's character is Hasidic and "eyepatch guy" is not. It was actually kinda the point of the book that these two guys from different worlds could be friends. So, yeah, shipping them is awkward.

LOL, me too. Now I kind of want to see the movie.

LOL, I ship it too. (Although I've never seen the movie version.) I don't really see it being completely against Judaism, either (although it would certainly be unacceptable within the Orthodox movement). And he does look really hot with an eyepatch.

It's unacceptable amongst most Orthodox movements. I have a friend who is both Orthodox, a lesbian, and on good terms with her community. She calls herself an "Orthodyke" and is very pleased with it.

I literally wrote a journal entry on my journal that said,
"(On the subject of ersatz homosexual relationships) You think Howard and Raj(from The Big Bang Theory *see icon*) are bad, read "The Chosen."

Reuven and Danny have such a beautiful relationship. I reread that book often, just because of that. I've only seen the movie once, but I really enjoyed that, too.

I'm still waiting to find the Danny to my Reuven...

OMG, this is so funny. I read The Chosen when I was a kid...long before the Internet and online fandoms, and long before I even knew what shipping and slash were...And, I shipped it back then.
