That you've decided to go back and go through the whole process of A levels again is something I commend you for. I also think it's perfectly normal to use a fictional character to motivate yourself to work. Heck, the only way I got myself to work for my (AS) Maths exam was to tell myself that I had to pass this exam in order to get psychic powers like Ness from Earthbound. That might be strange but it REALLY worked. Turned out to be the worst exam I've ever sat mind you but hey, I gave it my best shot and at least I didn't just sit and cry for the hour and a half.

How awesome do I think it is that Hermione inspired you to go back and work hard at kicking school's ass? SO AWESOME. To get inspiration from a character to do good things with your life is probably the greatest compliment an author could ever get. If she inspires you, don't feel bad about doing somethign zany like writing fic: just get back on that horse and kick those courses ass. BELIEVE IN THE HERMIONE THAT BELIEVES IN YOU.

Wow, that's great! I've lived in Cambridge my whole life and it's a beautiful place, but didn't even attempt to get in because I knew there was no way I could with my A level grades (plus, I hear that when they have too many candidates they fall back on GCSE grades to help them decide) even though I really wanted to go so I'd be close to home (hell, I'd be AT home). Also, my mum works there in the library.

Although, you might find Cambridge a pretty expensive place to live unless you're from London or somewhere. When I visited Manchester (that's where I've ended up) I couldn't believe the bus to the university was only a quid for both me and my mum, rather than the usual three or whatever (they've bumped it up recently all over as far as I can tell)

Still, I feel I should warn you that of my three straight-A immensely studious friends who tried for cambridge, none of them got in. My father offered to 'talk' to some of his friends there for me, but I decided to forego advancement via blatant nepotism. Classics is a good subject to go for though, or so I hear, one of my mum's friend's did classics at Cambridge and said it was great.

Latin is bloody difficult. I should know--chances are I just failed my latin exams, lol. I advise you to go over rules of grammar again and again and again, and not just try to memorise your set texts like I did. A level Latin is kind of terrible, as it turns out--our Latin professor, we could all tell, was shocked at how little we knew when we started this year--so please study, study, study as Hermione would do, and Bona Felicitas!

On the Cambridge=expensive thing, it's a very expensive part of the country to live in, but because the university has so much money, acccommodation there is considerably cheaper than in most universities. For comparison, my friend is going to Cambridge next year, and her room will cost her around £70/week. I'm going to Warwick, where rooms start at £73/week and go up to £122! So though your living expenses will be greater, you'll save money in other areas. There are also lots of grants and things - if you go for one of the richer colleges (generally the older ones) they'll throw money at you.

I second the sentiment that Classics is a good subject to go for - it's also comparatively less competitive, although since we're talking Cambridge, that's not saying much. Good luck!

Ha, I've lived in Oxford my whole life (although I've never actually wanted to study there) but if the admission rules are the same as they are for Cambridge then I can confirm the fact that (for some subjects at least) your GCSE grades are taken into account.
