Oh dear sweet pants, why?

I'm not even talking about the plot. Whatever about the plot. Vampire romances work for some people. I'm simply talking about it as a movie--it was abysmal. The camera-man only knew how to do three shots--medium, close-up, and swirly-out-spiral. I mean, for pity's sake, every single conversation had the camera slammed into the characters face for the entire duration of their line. It hurt.

Just...ugh...bad.

Cat's having sex.

Read the books. I'm not going to defend the writing, or the characterization, but they are incredibly compelling and completely impossible to put down. And they are about a million times better than the movie, so if you like that, you'll definitely like the books.

Don't worry. I bad-mouthed the series for a while too before I actually read them. The thing is... everything everyone says is wrong with Twilight is completely and utterly true, and yet I can't help but like them, and I'm willing to admit that! Not even anonymously! ;}

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you seriously? I couldn't even read the first book, it was so bad. The first twenty pages were Bella talking about her clothes and how everyone couldn't stop staring at her. How is that compelling at all?

[identity profile] runriverblue.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I felt like the movie left out a ton of characterization/explanation, what little there was anyway. When I watched it, I felt that I would be pretty confused if I hadn't read the book first.

I'm also willing to publicly admit that I like Twilight. XD Yes, it's easy to make fun of and I know it's got tons of flawsbut I still like it. Call it a guilty pleasure if you must, lol.

Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have only this to say:

Image (http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh8/Sweetest_Gale/?action=view&current=robgif2.gif)

It was good for the lulz, though - more than the book.

Re: Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] emerald-embers.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS IS THE SKIN OF A KILLER, BELLA!

I had such, such a good laugh watching the movie, which is more than I can say for reading the book (which just bored me). Oh, and there was the bonus of HOLY UNEXPECTED HOMOEROTICISM BATMAN with showing the Carlisle/Edward bite.

But yeah, I wouldn't say it was good. Just entertaining in its particular variety of badness.

I'll probably grab some mates, get sozzled, and go see the next one as well, in hope it'll be as funny.

Re: Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The Carlisle/Edward bite was the single best part of the movie. I saved the gif of that as soon as I found it. So hot.

The book made me both bored and angry. I spent a lot of time punching the book as I was reading it. There was a split second of Bella/Alice UST that made me happy, but that was it.

I'm mostly looking forward to the last movie. Bed destroying sex? Vomiting fountains of blood? Pedophile werewolf? That's entertainment right there.

Re: Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] emerald-embers.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the book was both annoying in that it was mediocre and annoying in that, okay, I devoured Anne Rice's books for the first part of my teenage years (before switching from primarily book fandoms - Neil Gaiman's aside - to videogame fandoms, and never regretting a moment), but it's actually a little painful seeing teenage girls devour that rubbish.

I can't wait to see what happens with the last movie. If they film it scene-for-scene it's going to be EPIC, and if they don't, the fandom wank will be even MORE epic.

Either way, popcorn shall be bought and lulz shall be had, so no complaints there!

(Also :D @ Impala icon)

Re: Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The Impala is love. I swear, if I had to choose among Sam, Dean, and the Impala, I'd take the car, shitty gas mileage and all. Although I'm a little upset with the show for starting me on a classic cars addiction that I simply can't support.

If they film it scene-for-scene it's going to be EPIC, and if they don't, the fandom wank will be even MORE epic.

It's a win-win situation. Especially if nuttymadam makes a video about the movie, which of course she will.

Unf. I wanted to post the second gif, but I didn't have it in my photobucket. Thank you.

You're very welcome. I'm a fan of the homoeroticism myself :3

Re: Really? I mean, really?

[identity profile] westerdrumlins.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. This is why I'm glad I watched the movie (which led me to reading the books). All the lulz are fanfuckingtastic.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say the movie was in my top 10, but I thought it was entertaining, at the least.

But don't worry about trying to read the books and getting hooked, they are just as awful as everyone says. I tried twice, twice I couldn't even get to the plot, because it was nothing but "Today everyone is looking at me because I am wearing *insert three page description*."

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
So, what, you were just on about how you hated it because it was trendy to do so? Way to be an individual, there...

Well, I've never seen the movie, but I did read the book. I thought it was pretty mediocre. The reason for its outlandishly huge popularity is because it portrays Edward as the perfect boyfriend, paints Bella as the perfect Mary Sue, and makes it incredibly easy for the reader to self-insert herself into this idealized situation.

[identity profile] beyondthescenes.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the minority. I liked the movie a lot better than the book. I couldn't even finish the first book; I had to put it down because I couldn't stomach all the Edward/Bella mush. At least the movie spared me the descriptions of Edward's perfection, the EB scenes seemed shorter/faster, and it devoted more scenes to the other characters.

As for the second, third, and fourth books, I only read parts of it; mostly the Jasper/Alice ones, and those that had Carlisle or Rosalie in them. I probably won't read the whole thing anymore. I'll just watch the movies.

[identity profile] roamingbadger.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
THIS! So true. I'm not saying the movie was like, #1 to me or anything, but SO SO SO much better than the books, for all the reasons you have already stated.

Sadly, I have read all the books, because I felt that I should read them before I decided to hate them. I honestly think the first book is the best of all of them... and that says a lot.

Srsly, though. Movie = huge, HUGE improvement upon the books.

[identity profile] westerdrumlins.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the whole Twilight thing was the first time I've ever thought a movie was better than the book.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Give the books a try. The searing melodrama made me laugh 'till I cried onscreen (though Carlisle? Or however you spell it - I'd hit his movie incarnation so very hard), but I actually enjoyed the books, in a guilty pleasure sort of way (yes, I'll even admit that un-anon). They really played up the conflict with the other vamps in the movie - the book doesn't have much conflict and is basically just 250 pages of sexual tension. If that's your bag, go for it.

[identity profile] lisaee.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I lol'd.

IDK, in a way I think people should at least give the first book a try before hating it. (Though don't do what I did and read all of them. Biggest waste of time ever.)

[identity profile] palsmarties.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You should have at least read them before you admitted to hating them.
Then it's just so much more fun to bash them.
