it's Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame"
i don't think it ever got as much love as say, The Little Mermaid or Lion King. It's not the best of the bunch, but it's pretty good...

I really wanted to facepalm when I read this, and it's nothing against you, OP. Disney made a morally bankrupt character into pretty much the polar opposite; if you've never read the book, I can't expect you to think anything less than "Phœbus is awesome!", because Disney!Phœbus IS the mostly-chivalrous character.

... if you'd like to keep your pleasant associations with Phœbus, NEVER read the book or see the musical. Even though I absolutely think you should see them; Frollo is made of awesome ♥

This. I totally enjoyed book!Phoebus and musical!Phoebus (Déchiré is such a good song); he was a great character, but he is not a good person in them, and he's nobody's ideal man. He really is the exact opposite of what he is in the book, in the movie. I don't totally hate him for what he did to Fleur-de-Lys, because it just seemed that they were both shallow in their interactions with each other, but I do hate him for what he did to Esmeralda. When I read that scene in the inn, my skin was crawling. I was glad when Frollo stabbed him.

I loved how his story ended in the book: "Phoebus, too, met a tragic end– he was married." [Paraphrased; I can't recall the exact wording.] I laughed so hard.

It IS quite a tragic end, ha. Linking two people who feel nothing towards each other into a near-permanent union of names and properties is most certainly tragic. As well as Fleur-de-Lys probably having conjugal obligations with someone who, in today's times, is likely filled with diseases.

Oh Lord, I hadn't even thought of that! Poor Fleur-de-Lys, not only is she stuck with a cad, she's stuck with a cad who probably gave her five diseases on their wedding night.

I really love that sort of…day-to-day tragedy, in how much less romantic it is than a tragedy ending in death. It's interesting. I'd like to read about their married life.

I don't think anyone but Esmeralda was supposed to be upset, at least I hope not. Cause seriously. That scene put me 100% on Frollo's side. Yes, he was creepily, voyeuristically lurking in a corner, but stabbing Phoebus in the act made up for that.

This secret made me cringe a bit. Not because of you, but because Disney proves once again that they did it completely WRONG.

Movie Phoebus? He kicked ass, and I completely agree that this version of him is an ideal man for me. He's chivalrous, has a sense of humor, caring, all that jazz.

Canon book Phoebus? ASSHOLE. Hate him. Passionately hoped he would die.
