I think fat fans are cuter than the methed-out looking skinny ones from RL experience.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate how so many people's response to fat-bashing is to bash skinny people (or to talk as if the fact that they personally find something attractive validates it). It makes me really sad. Nobody deserves to be hated on just for their body type.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. As tempting as it is to have the whole "Skinny people have nothing to bitch about...." it's not like skinny people (Special overly skinny) don't have just as many self esteem problems, etc. Even if they aren't worried about their weight...weight is highly the only thing to feel shitty about yourself about.

Everyone has self esteem bad moments, and there's no "Safe" group to lash out at.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Having a go at thin people for being thin perpetuates the whole problem of judging people on appearance just as much as having a go at fat people for being fat. It's part of the same thing and changing the group of people you're targeting doesn't make it any less wrong.

[identity profile] momentarily.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently we read anon's comment differently, because I don't see them doing either. Note, they said 'methed-out looking skinny ones' as opposed to 'skinny ones' - the latter of which, to me, implies all skinny people whilst the former implies people who are unhealthily skinny. Either way, I certainly don't see this phrased as 'my opinion = fact'. They used 'I think'. They didn't say 'fat fans are cuter thank skinny fans. Full stop.' and even if they had, it would still be their opinion. It's a matter of what the anon finds attractive; they're not saying SKINNY PEOPLE ARE BAD or that the opinions of those who are skinny are invalid, they're simply saying that they find fat people more attractive. That doesn't make their opinion inherently wrong.

However, I do agree with your last sentence.

Edits because I fail at coherency.

Well sure! Everyone finds different things attractive and there's nothing wrong with that. What I find objectionable is – well, firstly, the perceived attractiveness of people being brought up regarding a fat-bashing secret as though it is in some way relevant, as if what they find attractive is a defense of fat people somehow. How attractive any given person finds any other given person is not a measure of the second person's worth. Personally I find nothing more patronising than people saying what amounts to "I think fat is okay because I think fat people are attractive" and acting like that is supposed to mean anything to anyone but the person saying it.

Secondly, thin people can have body image issues and get shit for their body type just like fat people do, and calling them 'methed-out looking' is not exactly going to make any of them feel better about it. There is not a level of thinness at which it becomes okay to say hurtful things to someone.

Sure, the anon might not have meant to convey these things, but in this context it comes across as someone posting in a misguided attempt to defend fat people by voicing their irrelevant personal opinion of attractiveness and making a hurtful remark about thin people.

Hmm...yeah. I read it as 'all skinny people look methed-out', but it's hard to convey stuff over the internet (unless you write a whole essay defining every word you use).

Actually, I have a friend who looks unhealthy kinds of skinny, and can't help it. She eats like a pig, whatever the hell she wants, and she can't seem to gain weight. She's actually very healthy, though. It's odd. But she can't be the only one out there.

Seriously, I know some of these "thinspiration" folks might want to look like her, but she hates it. Especially when someone points out how scrawny she is. :/

(Anonymous) 2009-06-10 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
and how often do you hear about 'skinny' people being discriminated against because they're 'skinny'? I'd wager not near as often as people seem to discriminate against overweight people, as this secret, and many others in this very comm, demonstrate.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a fat person myself, I am painfully aware of society's many sickening injustices against fat people, but, dude, seriously? Just because fat people get it worse doesn't mean that giving thin people crap is okay. Because hey, guess what, they do get crap for it; the society we live in is horribly unforgiving of any body type that does not meet its unrealistic, unattainable ideals, especially if you're a woman. Yes, our culture idealises thinness, but it's an unrealistic thinness, and that doesn't mean everyone who's thin has it easy – people still think it's their business to assume you're anorexic and tell you to eat a damn sandwich and act like you are doing something wrong because they don't like the way you look. All of us are constantly told our bodies are imperfect and if we can't make them perfect we have failed as human beings. Fat hate is just one manifestation of this, and sure, it's one of the most vicious, but perpetuating it anywhere else it rears its ugly head – surprise surprise! – isn't going to make body hatred go away.

Thin people aren't the oppressors here. Our culture itself is oppressive and we are all victims. Lashing out at other victims doesn't solve anything.

uhm hi there.
I've had people ask me if I have eating disorders, tell me off for being small, and bitch me out for saying that it's hard to find clothes that fit. because I feel super cute, attractive, and sexy when I have to wear children's size clothing. what guy *doesn't* want that?

Skinny poeple are seen as accpetable targets to hate on. because we "have it all" "have no reason to complain" and "must be happy" since we apparently "have the body [we] want"

I didn't ask to look 12 even though I'm 18 anymore than someone asks to be fat.

c'mon now. it's not like one group deserves it more or something.
