Got a bit tangent-y; sorry about that!

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope that you're able to do that for someone! I think it's a really nice sentiment. And realistic, since your average Jane doesn't have that kind of money lying around to spend on it anyway. I kind of wish someone would do that for me, actually. My fashion sense is abysmal.

I agree with you, though - I love what they DO on the show, but I don't really like HOW they do it. The name-calling gets to me sometimes, like when they're watching the nominees on camera. I also don't like how it's not just clothes, but also hair and makeup. I've never seen them leave anyone's hair the same length as when they started; why not teach them to style what they've already got? And why do they always have to color it? And as for makeup, I'm biased because I hate having anything at all on my face and hands, but I also just think people are capable of looking good without it.

I don't get what's so wrong with using what we're born with, I guess. They make such a huge deal out of picking clothes that suit how people's bodies are really shaped, and then counter it by making them color their hair and put on makeup. Bit of a mixed message, IMO.

THIS.

I love how they really focus on getting clothes that fit your body type and really accentuate what you've got, and then am always disappointed when they completely change someone's hairstyle and color, and send out the message that you've got to wear makeup to be beautiful and mature. This particularly annoys me because unless I'm in a very certain kind of mood, the only thing I put on my face is moisturizer. That doesn't mean I'm not an adult woman, or that I'm not professional in the work place. It just means that I don't like makeup, and I shouldn't have to wear it to be considered a functional adult member of the working society.

I love finding out that I'm not completely alone in my thought process. &heart; Thank you for putting it in better words than I could - that's exactly it! For people who like makeup, it's all well and good, but some people don't like it, and that's perfectly okay. I just wish more people seemed to think so... it would let me avoid a lot of Q&A with people (a la, "Why don't you like makeup?! I bet you'd look so much nicer if you wore it!" Gee, thanks...)

I have heard from someone that has been on the show (on a message board so not entirely sure HOW accurate, but I didn't see any reason not to believe it) that they don't actually do as much making fun of the person as it seems on the show. Like they do a lot of actual talking about what works and what doesn't and why what works works and why what doesn't work doesn't work and then basically only do a few minutes while 'throwing away' clothes (that are actually donated to charities) and in the 360, and like you said, during the initial bits when watching the footage.

I've seen them leave hair alone three times, though. Twice when the hair the person had worked for them (once was a guy from way back when they still did guys and once was a woman who had short, close locks -- all he did for the guy was trim it and all he did for the woman was do a bit of product placement with a spray to keep things like cigarette smoke, etc out of it), and once when the woman just absolutely refused to let him even touch her hair.

As for the makeup, I can't really say because I'm a guy and know virtually nothing about makeup, but it always seems like she doesn't really do a lot of makeup. More like "this is your best feature here's how to make it stand out" stuff. But, like I said, no practical experience so I could be way off.

This was a really cool response and I thought you should know.

Interesting stuff to know; thanks for sharing! I suppose the more negative stuff is what gets shown on TV for the drama aspect, maybe. I hope that the post you read was true; constructive criticism is much better than flat-out criticism. I always felt bad during those parts of the show because it's like, maybe not all, but at least some of the people on that show already have self-image/self-esteem issues, and trash-talking them just makes it seem like they feel the need to tear people down completely just to re-build them in the show's image, if that makes sense.

I would be that last woman, haha. Nobody's hacking off my long hair; just teach me how to put it in some different up-dos or something. And don't touch it with dye. Guh. But yeah, I'm assuming the guy in question also had short hair - they really seem to have something against long hair, at least on the episodes I've seen! Not sure why that is; easier to manage, I guess, but it's really not for everyone.

I'm a girl and I honestly don't know much about makeup either, so I'm afraid I can't be of any help there. I don't wear it; I don't like how it feels on my face, and I don't like having to constantly worry about smudging it and touching it up throughout the day, etc. etc. (The fact that I wear glasses doesn't help.) But I do agree that it doesn't seem like they apply a lot of it. I just kind of wish they'd go without once in a while. A "Here's how you can look your best even when you don't have time to apply makeup!" kind of thing. At least they don't cake it on...

Carmindy usually does her '5 Minute Face' a lot, and 5 minutes is quite doable, really :)

What'shisname always gives everyone the same damn hair cut. I'm sorry, but out of all the people he's given short hair, only one actually looked good with it.

Re: Got a bit tangent-y; sorry about that!

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nick Arojo, and I disagree. I think generally the people look 10X better when he's done with them.

Re: Got a bit tangent-y; sorry about that!

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. He has skills, but sometimes it's a matter of how hair is done and not a matter of length, and I stand behind that some people look better with longer hair.

Re: Got a bit tangent-y; sorry about that!

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
While that's true, the problem is often that people's long hair is SO unhealthy and dead and the ends are split for 6 inches, in order to make their whole look fresher and healthier, he has to cut off the dead hair.

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, Yu-Gi-Oh! I miss that fandom...

Ahem. Yeah, I kind of agree. They don't usually look awful, but I do think he's a bit short-hair-crazy. And his own hair kind of gave me the creeps back when it was curly, but that's another matter entirely. (He looked greasy; I did not really trust him with other people's hair when he went around looking like that.) Of course, his solution was to hack it all off. XD; But for him, it worked.

Join us, we have cookies and punch.

He does do a good job, I admit, but some people look better with longer hair. I want to go on the show, but I would never let him cut it higher than my shoulders. Really short hair on me makes me feel extremely uncomfortable and makes my neck cold. :C

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I always figure they look at it the same way as clothing. Just as the clothes fit the body, hair and make up make a difference in everything above the neck. I don't always like the hair, but often the people already have stuff done to their hair anyway. It's like...if somebody has a hairstyle that makes their hair look thin and they do something they think makes it look thicker that's the same idea as dressing to show off your proportions the best way. There are a lot of women who look fine w/o make-up, of course, and they can probably continue not to wear it. But it's probably good that they *can* wear it in a way they feel looks good sometimes.

Not that I always agree with the haircuts, but it seems like that's the idea. I remember the woman who wouldn't cut her hair and also asked for the different updos like was mentioned below and it always makes me picture Victorian hairstyles because it's just been a long time since hairstyles have been about updos outside of formal wear. Her hair was really long--I doubt a regular hairstylist could do much with it and even if they could she probably couldn't recreate it.
