as someone with knowledge in oncology: yes, throat cancer is really nasty, but! depending on how late "later stage" actually is, theres still thing he can do. There might be surgery, radiation and or chemo. There are palliative treatment options that can improve quality of life. Most important is nutrition. So meal replacement drinks are a good option. You might want to accompany him to his appointment next week. Ppl usually forget half of what is said in these appointments, so having a second person there helps alot to retain info. dont be shy to write down queations to ask the nurse/doctors in advance. Making notes is also fine.
And if it is really "too late", there's still options for QoL.
