Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2023-06-04 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)1. The sufferers tend to be pathetic wet blankets who'd rather stand there and suffer than do anything about their situation, making them utterly boring to read about.
2. And more importantly, there's some sweet psychological horror about the idea of "this person will literally die if you don't fall in love with them". Especially if they're already in a loving relationship with their true love, or if they're completely aro/ace. Imagine the guilt if the sufferer does die. Or the judgement from their peers.
3. There's also a great potential of the love target to be malicious about it. Imagine a serial killer who's m.o. is enticing people to fall for them, only to leave them to choke.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)Admittedly, I haven't read hanahaki in many fandoms/for many pairings, so I'm sure there's a LOT more of the wet blanket protagonists you describe. But I think I'd LOVE either something from the beloved's POV or like... an outsider perspective from a close friend who hasn't been told, and the puzzling out. Or the psychological horror and guilt from someone who just ASSUMES they're the one being pined after, honestly. There's so much variety that you could get by switching up the POV!
