Honestly that sounds like a great twist-- though not every fic I've read writes a wet blanket protagonist! My favorite was focused on a character working up a bucket list because he was confident-- and not without reason-- that his love interest could not possibly return his feelings, and he was going to enjoy/do something with his remaining time instead of moping around.

Admittedly, I haven't read hanahaki in many fandoms/for many pairings, so I'm sure there's a LOT more of the wet blanket protagonists you describe. But I think I'd LOVE either something from the beloved's POV or like... an outsider perspective from a close friend who hasn't been told, and the puzzling out. Or the psychological horror and guilt from someone who just ASSUMES they're the one being pined after, honestly. There's so much variety that you could get by switching up the POV!
