Hulu-related question

(Anonymous) 2023-06-07 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
To those who have Hulu: Do you plan on watching Age of Influence? Have you already seen it? I know for sure I'm going to watch episode 2 but am wondering how the docuseries is overall.

Don't know if they are on streaming, but Rich Hall's documentaries about American culture were always fun.

I mostly watch music documentaries - Some Kind of Monster is a classic in the "messy warts and all" doc genre, obviously, though I have no idea if/where that's streaming since I have it on DVD lol. The SWANS documentary, Where Does a Body End?, is similar in that it includes a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that isn't the most flattering -vthat one's on Tubi, so free.

Also WATCH HOLY HELL. Essentially, a guy who was a cult member for decades was asked by the cult leader to film stuff for propaganda videos. He left the cult, took the footage with him, and made a documentary that's both about the cult itself and his and other ex-members' experiences leaving it. It's on Peacock.

The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story - on Hulu
Tower (2016) - 1966 shootings at the University of Texas at Austin - on Amazon Prime Video with Amc Plus add-on

Navalny on HBOMax is a wild ride and I really enjoy it. It's about a Russian opposition leader and how he's persecuted.

The BBC Historic Farm Series is 4 seasons of tv but it's also a great documentary of Historic Farm Life.

'What Happened, Brittany Murphy?' also deserves a rec too. I saw it and thought, "What DID happen to Brittany Murphy? Haven't seen anything from her in a while." Long story short, it's very very sad.

Shirkers (I hope it's still up on Netflix) - a woman reflects on her love for filmmaking and what Singapore was like in the 1990s - early 2000s (IIRC) while she was a teen cinephile with her friends

Probably a favorite doc due to it hitting really close to home and I wasn't expecting it to.

What phone do you have?

[personal profile] scissorsevered 2023-06-07 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on getting a new cellphone next year, and I've been browsing different kinds. What phones do you currently have, and what are the pros and cons of them?

It really depends on what you do with your phone. I have a Moto Z Droid. I mostly use it to browse the internet, play sudoku, keep my daily schedule, and listen to audiobooks I checked out from the library. I have no idea if it has a good camera or not, because I only use the camera to take pictures of my cats so I've never put in the research on what makes a good phone-camera.

For what I do with my phone, this one was a good option. It was inexpensive, and is powerful enough.

I have an iPhone. Mine currently is the 11 Pro, which was the middle of the road option for that release (14 is the current Gen, and 15 should be out around Septemberish I believe).

I have a long history of using Apple products so the iPhone just makes sense for me. I did try switching to Android about five years ago and hated it. Features were hidden in a way I couldn’t find them and the search function for finding them was hit or miss. It’s rare I can’t find something on iPhone and the search function always turns it up when that happens.

I love the cameras on iPhones! The three lens cameras take phenomenal photos! When I switched to Android, I bought a phone that, on paper, had a superior camera to any on iPhone at the time. But all of my photos looked like ass. There’s something about the iPhone camera software that really sets the pictures apart.

Another good feature for me is the available extras; I have Apple Fitness and an Apple Watch and I couldn’t live without them. Apple Fitness is my total workout other than walking (I can’t run). Combined with the watch, I can see some cool stuff like how I’m doing on a workout compared to others who have done it before me. Am I hitting my cardio target, stuff like that.

And I love the Watch! I don’t have the cellular one, just the entry level one and it’s awesome. I can read texts while I’m doing the dishes, tell Siri to set timers (I do that with the phone a lot, too), add reminders and edit my calendar…it’s just really the right features for me. Plus I love tracking my physical activity, seeing the weather at a glance on the same screen as the clock face, and knowing what time it is in the time zone where most of my friends live.

One last accessory I can’t live without now that I’ve had it is the Air Tags. I set things down and forget where CONSTANTLY. I’m working really hard on improving and I am doing better but some items frequently fall victim and it’s great being able to play a sound to follow so I can grab them.

But the feature I use most on iPhone is Siri, specifically “Hey Siri, where are you?” I have it set so Siri responses are always spoken so when I ask, he says, “I’m over here” and I can find him lol

I also had a substantial iTunes library before iphones even existed which plays a part in my continued ownership. I don’t stream music, I really just listen to the same songs/albums/artists all the time with little change so not having to pay more money for rights to listen to all that stuff yet again is nice. I’ve paid the artists many times for those albums and songs on record, then cassette, then cd, and then iTunes.

My phone is four years old and can get pretty slow sometimes. I would replace it this second but the latest iPhone still uses their proprietary lightning charging. The next model will have USB-C so I’m holding out for that.

But if none of that is right for you, definitely look into Android phones. I’ve heard good things about the (latest?) Google phone in particular.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 21 Ultra! I used it for the regular stuff like listening to music, browsing the internet, stuff like that, but I also use it a ton for work (so much so that my company gives its employees a monthly stipend), which requires a ton of photo taking, switching back and forth between apps/screens, and inputting info. The only con I have with this phone is that it's a little big for my hand, but now that I have this job that's also a pro, haha.

I have an iPhone 8. I like the size, but I wish the camera was better.

TCL Flip Go. I use my phone as an alarm clock and for the occasional call/text; that's it. It's actually a really nice phone, but it has some really annoying notifs that I can't turn off, i.e. I get "the clock is running" and "alarm set to go off in 1 hour" every. single. day.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S21.

I use it every day doing my daily tasks, etc. I've had it for 2 years now. Still running good.

I've always been a lot more comfortable with Andriod devices so I feel like all Samsung phones I've owned have always been easy to navigate.

As someone else mentioned with their Galaxy, it's a little big on my tiny hands. Otherwise, no major complaints about this phone.

Google Pixel 3 (the newest is a 6, I believe). Got it refurbed and i THINK it was under 200, possibly under 100, I can't remember.

It's an excellent size, love the color and how it feels, has a good camera/video/night sight stuff.

I use it for calls, texts, pictures, directions when I'm driving somewhere and a couple of games (solitaire, a color-hue-matching game). FOR ME - uses almost no memory or battery, charges fast, plenty of storage, easy to navigate. Uses the Android platform.

Depends on your budget and what you use/ want to use your phone for.

I usually get the cheapest Samsung Galaxy (because I trust and like Android after years of using them). Currently have an A50. This works for me because all I use my phone for is calls, messages, the internet, listening to music and occasionally writing or watching videos. It should last me 3 years or so.

That said, if you regularly watch big movies, use your phones for video meetings, play graphics heavy games, and/or specifically want a really good camera, you may want a better quality phone for those purposes. Not that my phone won't do those things - it just won't do them as well.

Keep those masks on, stay inside if you can and don't open your windows/AC.

Stay safe.

Also, to my Canadian brethren dealing with the fires/aftermath, stay safe out there (which sounds trite AF, but in all sincerity, I hope you guys are alright)
