Why is 2023 so exhausting

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-06-07 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone feel like this year has been one of the most exhausting? It is only June, but I just feel like this year has already had so much, just so much. I feel mentally exhausted. Can this year just go away now?

Yes. My mom died right before Christmas and it's been a nonstop shit show since then.

I hope you get some time to rest, both mentally and physically.

Yes. Even with the pandemic, my job was same old same old. I had it running like clock work. Then weird stuff starting happening in January. We run on a monthly schedule, so I thought, "I just need to get to the February and work will go back to normal." LOLNO. It still hasn't gotten back to normal and each month is a DIFFERENT weirdness. I'm so mentally exhausted I've started napping for hours on the weekend (if I'm not working OT because of the crazy).

For me, it's been exhausting because the things that happened in 2022 that could be easily explained away have wreaked utter havoc. For example, one of my co-workers had major family medical issues, so she was barely working the last four or five months of 2022. That meant the majority of the work was to be completed by myself and a newer guy, and him getting properly trained got put off for a lot of different reasons. This was excused in 2022, but this year my boss has finally come face to face with the downstream effects of this (namely the new guy cherry picking work and not learning how to dive into more complicated issues).

She and I have tried different methods of trying to nudge both of my coworkers into working on more involved emails, but the pace of this training has not been fast enough. I finally told my boss it's time to be blunt with them since I cannot be the only one handling more intricate cases. This will be the primary topic at the next team meeting. Thankfully we can all meet virtually. That way, I can mute myself and be off video while my coworkers try to explain why they've avoided all the difficult stuff.

Yes, because I have a cough that won't go away for almost 3 months now. A COVID test at the end of March turned up negative.

I feel that. Been trying to get back in shape and head off any further medical problems but stress from multiple sources (and consequently stress-eating and stress... "slacking") are just wearing me down. Trying to be hopeful but GODDAMN, shit is crazy.

Hope the year gets better for you, and for everyone else (unless they're a raging asshole who benefits from the collective suckage or something).

Because we're still living in 2016. The year that just wouldn't fucking die already.

My last mom-figure passed away last week and my car got stolen today, so I feel this sentiment.

I just read through the comments. I'm sorry for everyone who has had a rough go the last...forever. God, it feels like forever.

What new things have you seen on the internet lately?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Preferably fun things since I'm in Canada and the country is on fire rip.

Mine is this silly game of 'Antidepressants or Tolkien Character':

https://antidepressantsortolkien.vercel.app/

My best so far is 19 out of 24. I'm terrible at it. It's great. And some of the antidepressants would make awesome Tolkien names.

That was hilarious. I got 15 out of 24 but most of them were purely chance.

This is one of the best things I've ever seen. What a random fantastic idea! I love the internet.
I got 14 out of 24 ahaha

I just discovered moments ago that Hansen recently rerecorded Mmmbop, and released it as Mmmbop 2.0. And honestly it's pretty good!

What genre would you like to see more of?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Secret 7 got me thinking. I've always wanted more sitcom supernatural or fantasy shows. Stargate sort of did this with some good comedy episodes and general humor, but I'd love to see just a straight up sitcom. Like Friends but...idk, elves and ghosts or set in space or something.

I just want more horror that isn't "technology is scary" or weirdly sexual.

For fantasy-horror.
More fantasy set in different sorts of cultures. Not just modern-day or medieval Europe.
More comedy-fantasy or scifi like Galavant, Mystery Men, or Galaxy Quest.
More Lovecraftian-style fantasy and/or horror and/or scifi
More shows with time travel or space ship or wormhole or whatever where we explore a different time or place every episode.
Some kind of post-apocalypse thing where the apocalypse isn't a plague or zombies.

Most fundamentally, episodic / procedural canons where a large cast of characters tries to solve episodic problems with a genre twist, whether it's horror, fantasy or sci-fi.

It is the perfect plot structure and ambience for me, and there used to be a ton of these shows, and now there are far fewer, and I hate it.

Personally I'd like more shows that have people with supernatural abilities but are always in regular clothes. They are also disconnected from others like themselves and have to do mundane things like try to get promotions at work or something.

(Barring that, I'd love a show with an omniscient main character whose main plot arcs involve trying to grapple with their mental health.)

Sci-fi like 'The Expanse' that's more science-real, has no stupid horror overtones, and is sex-lite or totally gen/found family. Also, please, no fucking 'humans are so special' moments.

Post-apocalypse with no zombies (though i dearly love them) that focuses more on how people SURVIVE. Like - season one is immediately post whatever happened, season two is maybe a couple years later, etc. I want to see scavenging in destroyed cities, i want to see people figuring out how to plant food again, learning skills.... No rape, no stupid gangs of roving thugs that kill everyone, no maniacal overlords that kill everyone.

What Scene/Ep NEVER FAILS

[personal profile] tabaqui 2023-06-08 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
to make you cry?
I'm rewatching ER (AGAIN!), and just watched season 8, ep 18 'Orion in the Sky' - the ep where Dr. Greene decides he's done.
'You set the tone, Carter.'

Ugly-cry, every time.
