This won't comfort you (nor should it) but I've found that since this happens in all spheres of life, at least when the friendship is largely virtual you have the receipts to back up your understanding. I've had shitty friendships where something felt off for ages, but I couldn't pinpoint what the other person did because their general shittiness was like a "vibe" and I would almost gaslight myself into thinking I was the problem. With fandom friendships you can literally go "they didn't talk to me at all between May 8th and November 16th, and both times it was about them - the fuck?"

That really was what it was.
When I decided to do the cutoff, every time I'd feel guilty and consider sending them a "hi" DM, I'd re-read our interactions and be like, "remember how for months they'd go silent and the only reason they talked to me again the last 5 times they went silent and returned was because they had a crisis in their personal life, remember that they'd dismiss my stuff, remember that they would be the ones to kill the convos and they only resumed, again, when they had a crisis."
