To be honest it seems like these days OC centric stories are more accepted than they used to be . I know when I was young and new in fandom they were practically a taboo but thankfully people don't seem to care as much anymore. Probably because a lot of us are too old to care lolol.

I'd try writing it . Old fans might appreciate it and I think a lot of newer readers would come in with a different mindset.

If nothing else it could just be fun to write :D

I had a similar experience. I found an old hard drive and found all sorts of old fic I totally forgot about writing, including some I actually posted on ff.net. Went and yup, they are still there. And actually have more kind comments than I would have expected! While the writing is obviously clunky the overall fic is okay and I've toyed with the idea of re-writing/updating it, but it's for a dead fandom that nobody will read. Still thinking of doing it just for me.

I occasionally think of doing this with my first "real" fic on the net. (So old I think it only got hosted on my personal site, and other people's fansites who asked if they could also host it! Don't think I ever put it on ff.net because I didn't have an account there yet...) Also an OC-gets-with-popular-character fic, because at the time I had no idea that wasn't what everyone did, I certainly had read enough other fics in a similar vein. And frankly, they were entertaining and creative, so now I'm wondering why I was later embarrassed by having also written one.

I still think it wasn't terrible, and the sequel (which was one of those dreaded "next generation" fics) had some good stuff going for it, and I could make it a lot better if I redid the darned thing after 25 years more experience.

...I'd probably be a lot more likely to do it if the fandom in my case was actually obscure and dead, but it's actually huge again right now. :P No reason for you not to write anything in an old obscure dead fandom - not like anyone's going to complain! (And honestly even if the fandom was not obscure/dead, I'd support you doing whatever you like anyway... but large fandoms may be pickier/snarkier. :P)

Yeah, I mean, asymmetrical games are incredibly hard to balance, especially at multiple different levels of play. That's just kind of the nature of the beast.

They're still *such* a fucking cool concept, though.

This won't comfort you (nor should it) but I've found that since this happens in all spheres of life, at least when the friendship is largely virtual you have the receipts to back up your understanding. I've had shitty friendships where something felt off for ages, but I couldn't pinpoint what the other person did because their general shittiness was like a "vibe" and I would almost gaslight myself into thinking I was the problem. With fandom friendships you can literally go "they didn't talk to me at all between May 8th and November 16th, and both times it was about them - the fuck?"

There’s a middle ground here for me, in that yes: it shouldn’t be assumed by creators that what they make it gold and everyone is going to lap what they create up, people can and will dislike story elements, etc.

But on the other hand I have seen how godawful and entitled fans have gotten in that last 10 years in regards to shows/movies not doing what they personally want that I don’t think creators should be beholden to bratty fans who want their own way.

Honestly I just want that fourth wall back, but its way too late for that. :/
