I went in watching season 1 with very low expectations (I disliked the book, or more accurately was bored by the book) but my friend was super excited so I watched it, and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I think the low budget was part of the charm for me. I am very hesitantly looking forward to season 2.

This was my experience too. Tennant and Sheen are so good, they make the characters come alive when the book didn't give me any strong sense of who they were.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Tennant and Sheen were easily the best part of the show for me. I haven't read the book so I don't know of the rest of the cast/writing was just underwhelming or if these two were just that good but if season two focusses more on them then I've got no complaints.

I wasn't expecting Gabriel to be central, and I've got SUPER mixed feelings about it... I really love Jon Hamm's comedy acting, but I just know this is going to lead to more Gabriel/Aziraphale and something about that like, legit panics me and I don't know why? It's such a STUPID thing to call a 'trigger', but it's way beyond a 'squick' because I'll get physically ill.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like Gabriel ran away because he's got the hots for Beel after the first season and Aziraphale is the only one who would Get It. Because that feels the most on-theme.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, season 1 and the reaction on social media (mostly Tumblr, some Twitter) was a slightly depressing education on how fandom goes gaga over what was, IMO, an extremely modest amount of m/m. I keep this to myself mostly because someone always gets upset when I say it and as an older person yeah, I know about gay subtext. It's been around for ages. In the 21st century, I'm surprised peoples' standards aren't higher, but I think people are so starved for positive gay relationships on mainstream media that they're happy with skimpy portions of it... portions so lean that it can easily, easily be missed by viewers, which means the show has nailed best of both worlds by contenting people who want m/m in their media and providing plausible deniability people who would lose their shit if they see gay relationships in their media.

That makes it sound like I hated the show. I didn't. I didn't love it, but it was decent and I enjoyed the Crowley and Aziraphale bits most of all. I'll probably watch season 2, but without getting my hopes up.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"You go too fast for me" sure is plausibly deniable when I don't think I've ever heard it OUTSIDE of romantic contexts with how it's used.

And Crowley wanting to run away with Aziraphale and damn the rest of everything... Sure is plausibly deniable. Somehow.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, there you are. I knew you or someone like you would show up. People went really hard on the "You go too fast for me" being SUPER OBVIOUS ROMANTIC GAYSPEAK and I was like... okay, if you say so. Crowley wanting to run away with Aziraphale is closer. I'd say both are still very safe in the subtext zone, though.

Like I said, people get upset and accuse me of homophobia because I didn't find Good Omens quite as conspicuously gay as they did. I picked up on it just fine, and enjoyed seeing that play out between the two characters. But having heard fandom buzz about it before seeing the show itself, I expected more than that and was a bit disappointed. I should've known better, probably.

You sound really young. Unless it's confirmed by the show itself, it's subtext. Literally. Not because I want it to be or anyone else, but because the show has left enough plausible deniability on purpose so they won't lose audience numbers- because yes, we do still live in that kind of world.

I've actually shipped Aziraphale and Crowley for 15+ years, and it was my biggest bug bear with the TV show - that even Neil Gaiman didn't have the balls to set it in stone.

I'm late to the party and just watched the first episode the other day. I do like it a lot but I am very not looking forward to more of the kids. They seem really bratty and I didn't like how they were portrayed as good kids when their attitudes were just as bad as the kid that was mistaken for the antichrist and was supposed to be unlikable. (And who I contrarily felt bad for because with an upbringing like that, who wouldn't turn out a little bit shitty. Actual antichrist kid has nice parents and no excuse for being a little snot.)

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
They're not really supposed to be 'good' kids, as originally written. Just kids. Rapscallions. A bit wild. Frustrating for the adults around them. But still - they're children, and they'll prob'ly turn out okay.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I found them all annoying. And before anyone jumps in with bUt tHaT's jUsT bEiNg rEaLiStIc, please stop typing and take a deep breath. I didn't say it was unrealistic. I said I found them annoying. Plenty of 100% realistic things are annoying just like plenty of real life things are annoying, the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Shrug. Okay, you found them annoying.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
What did he even do that was so bad?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
A pretty massive spoiler leaked today that puts a lot of this conversation in kind of a different light, so...avoid the tags on Twitter and Tumblr if you don't want to know, and go take a look if you!

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Do we believe the spoiler, though? That's the question.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Neil Gaiman confirmed it, and he's very very upset about it all over his Tumblr right now.

What is this spoiler? I've blocked GO tag because I felt that show was so so and I am annoyed by fans but I am CURIOUS

That fandom was always pretty unpleasant for me because most discussions were fancasting and I just never cared about having an adaptation. I did try to watch season 1 but it didn’t work for me. I stay out of the fandom entirely now because I don’t want to harsh anyone’s happy but I’m more sad than ever that I’ve never been able to just squee over the book with others who loved it and now I don’t think I ever will get that chance :(

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Heeey! I would like to squee!
(ok, ok I spend my time fancasting buuut) This book is my comfort food

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hooboy.

Good Omens on-line fandom is goddamn exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
It is and it's the reason why I'm not super excited about season 2. I love the book. I ship C/A but their fandom has become so damn annoying now.
