I think this is just a cultural difference between North America (even Canada? IDK I think mainly USA) and rest of the world. It's not necessary bad, it's just... strange.

I get it in theory, but I don't really get it when I'm approached like that or when I see discourse online when people say stuff like "AS AN ITALIAN..." and then the OP is totally 100% born an raised in USA with an Italian great grandfather. Like. WTF. LOL
This is why I initially asked that anon (you?) what they meant by "Italian by birth". When you interact in USA centric online spaces it gets very confusing pretty quickly.
