God hard same.

Related: I really really miss fandom being a kind of hush hush in the know kind of hobby. I hate that it's so mainstream.

Related: Same! In most cases I cringe hard when show runners and/or actors talk about fic or fandom. It's not for you guys! You're not invited! Keep out!

Yes! Keep Out indeed. I also hate when fans will instigate it just as much, like sharing a link to a fic or art with an actor or asking cringe fandom questions. Like people, the first unspoken rule of fandom is you don't talk (to actors) about fandom. C'mon.

I'm the same. Fandom is like my dirty secret.... It's shared between me and my fandom friends, but I never talk about my fanfiction or doujinshi interest outside of that small circle.
Show runners being aware of fanworks or discussions on reddit or other social medias makes me cringe HARD. That is why I could never watch any SPN con panel when I was really into the show.

Late to the conversation, but oh man, I totally relate. The weird thing is, I still treat it as though it's hush-hush and only for other fandom participants' eyes. Like, I will never admit to writing it IRL unless I know the other person is a fic writer who will also never admit to doing so IRL.

sa

Er, ignore that "late to the conversation" part. It's been a very long day.

God same. I hate feeling like creators are trying to angle for fandoms. You don't get to pick what we hyperfixate on! You just create the thing you really want to and maybe we latch on like ticks.

*sigh* Same. I feel like it's kind of made me not be able to make friends very easily, since my main hobby that I've devoted so much time and effort to is something I don't feel like I can talk about in public.

I've felt more comfortable discussing my fanfic compared to my interest in the comments section of YouTube. I almost envy your position, OP.

Who's the "we" in "secretly claiming"?

From what I've seen, people have just straight out said it is a good film, from when it was released.

Yes, there is a divide on people who say it is a legit good film and those who say it's not a good film.

But to try to paint this opinion of "TLJ was good" as if we somehow are retroactively saying that it was immediately tossed aside as bad and "now" people are "trying to claim it's 'secretly' good" seems to me like someone is trying to repaint the narrative in their favor so they can use this as the slamdunk of "TLJ has always been bad and will always be bad, stop trying to pretend it is somehow good" to end conversation about TLJ.
And not as a real observation of how the discourse surrounding TLJ really went down.

It's OK that it was a devisive film. The Empire Strikes Back was devisive despite some trying to revision it as The One Every One Agreed For A Long Time As The Best Star Wars Film for quite a while (and IDK if people are still trying to make that claim but TESB was devisive for a long time, people just want to pretend they 'always' knew it was good when The Return of the Jedi was released and it disappointed people.

Misfire, sorry!

The old cringey stuff has been legitimatised in media and pop culture. Fanfic hasn’t, in fact it’s usually only brought up in negative context. It makes it a lot harder to fight preconceived assumptions when you don’t have some outside source to point to as a better depiction of what you do.
