Who's the "we" in "secretly claiming"?

From what I've seen, people have just straight out said it is a good film, from when it was released.

Yes, there is a divide on people who say it is a legit good film and those who say it's not a good film.

But to try to paint this opinion of "TLJ was good" as if we somehow are retroactively saying that it was immediately tossed aside as bad and "now" people are "trying to claim it's 'secretly' good" seems to me like someone is trying to repaint the narrative in their favor so they can use this as the slamdunk of "TLJ has always been bad and will always be bad, stop trying to pretend it is somehow good" to end conversation about TLJ.
And not as a real observation of how the discourse surrounding TLJ really went down.

It's OK that it was a devisive film. The Empire Strikes Back was devisive despite some trying to revision it as The One Every One Agreed For A Long Time As The Best Star Wars Film for quite a while (and IDK if people are still trying to make that claim but TESB was devisive for a long time, people just want to pretend they 'always' knew it was good when The Return of the Jedi was released and it disappointed people.

The old cringey stuff has been legitimatised in media and pop culture. Fanfic hasn’t, in fact it’s usually only brought up in negative context. It makes it a lot harder to fight preconceived assumptions when you don’t have some outside source to point to as a better depiction of what you do.

Or maybe different people have different opinions? Personally I think TROS was absolutely terrible both as a movie and as a Star Wars movie. But everyone has different opinions on things. Just because people disagree with you doesn't mean there is some conspiracy.

You could equally make the exact same argument on the other foot. If TLJ is so obviously awful, why is there any entire cottage industry devoted to explaining how bad it is and how it ruined Star Wars forever? It's a completely symmetrical exercise. If TLJ is so obviously bad, why do you have to come to this website and make fandom secrets explaining how bad it is?

The reality is, for whatever reason, TLJ is a movie that many people are completely incapable of being normal about, whether they think it's good or they think it's bad. That isn't any kind of argument about its quality one way or the other. People are just crazy.

TLJ's quality aside, this strikes me as an extremely hollow argument. The youtube-clickbait-media-complex is full of Entire Industries discussing the Quality of Things. Across the Spiderverse has only been out for a few weeks and youtube is going absolutely feral trying to feed me an algorithm stuffed entirely with "this thing is great" - even thought I think most people agree that it is, in fact, great.

There are entire actual academic industries multiple centuries old discussing why Shakespeare or Milton or fucking Homer are great.

I'm not saying TLJ is on the level of any of those (LMAO) just that the existence of a dedicated fanbase making a cottage industry out of pro-thing commentary is not exactly, historically, a mark that Thing is obviously or objectively bad.

The discourse around The Last Jedi drives me insane. People post hour-long videos on YouTube saying it sucks, so people post hour-long videos saying why it doesn't, so people post hour-long videos saying it does, ad infinitum

Love it, hate it, whatever. Just talk normally about it. It's just a movie.

For what it's worth, it's one of my favorite Star Wars movies and I could not care less whether other people like it or not. Just keep the discourse away from me.

I don't watch kids' movies in general. I just don't care for them. Usually the only circumstances were when I was over at a friend's house and my friend's kids were watching them and I keep my mouth shut to be polite but I don't enjoy them at all.
