At least in the new live action movie Ariel and Eric actually had stuff in common, like their love for artifacts. I liked that.

Oh, that's so cool! I'm glad they fleshed him out a little so that they had something to connect on instead of just, like... humans are her special interest and he is one.

They also fail to set up the statue of Eric before it ends up in Ariel's grotto so it's a complete wtf moment. No, seeing a wooden crate fall into the sea doesn't count.

But Ariel is slightly more proactive, there's a very cute scene where she tries to tell Eric her name that I like, again, based on a shared interest.

It is NOT a perfect movie but it's better than Beauty and the Beast or Lion King. I haven't seen Aladdin or Mulan and I don't think something like this and Cruella or Maleficent are comparable.
