Really?! (I live in California myself) I'd think tonkatsu would be very popular-- it's basically the Japanese version of schnitzel...

right?? I do make it myself when I can but it's such a mess. now, okonomiyaki on the other hand, I'll make that anytime I can get my grubby hands on nagaimo.

It probably would be, if people gave it a try. But I'm in the Midwest and a lot of people are easily spooked by foreign food and have paranoid ideas about what it might contain and accidentally eating something weird. Telling people it's a breaded pork chop would help, but most people can't get past "tonkatsu" or the idea that a Japanese restaurant serves more than just raw fish.
