I'm perpetually mad that her videos keep popping up on my recs because it reminds me of all the delicious, delicious food I had in Japan and CAN'T GETT HERE because in the midwest "Japanese" is all California roll or teriyaki steak and not a damn thing else. Not a single tonkatsu as far as the eye can see, sob.

Really?! (I live in California myself) I'd think tonkatsu would be very popular-- it's basically the Japanese version of schnitzel...

right?? I do make it myself when I can but it's such a mess. now, okonomiyaki on the other hand, I'll make that anytime I can get my grubby hands on nagaimo.

It probably would be, if people gave it a try. But I'm in the Midwest and a lot of people are easily spooked by foreign food and have paranoid ideas about what it might contain and accidentally eating something weird. Telling people it's a breaded pork chop would help, but most people can't get past "tonkatsu" or the idea that a Japanese restaurant serves more than just raw fish.

Are you close to a metro area or college town?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
college town, and my point still mostly stands. there are high-end ramen shops, but they're all $25/bowl fusion, not the kickass 500Y bowl I can get at a corner standup anywhere in Osaka. I'll pay for good but not for mediocre.

$25 in a college town? Yiiiikes. I guess I've been lucky in where I am in the Midwest.

I don't think you're ever going to find $5 ramen bowls anywhere in the U.S., unfortunately.

nayrt - LOL, maybe instant ramen. But yeah, no such luck and you likely wouldn't enjoy the quality of a $5 ramen bowl in the States.

There's pretty good $10 to $15 ramen (or Chinese noodle soups) but nothing cheaper than that. I remember when there used to be good $5 places here but that was 10 or 15 years ago.
