considering I basically assimilated a character’s full personality to survive high school bullying, I KNOW I still got some of his quirks

That doesn't seem terribly healthy but I guess whatever gets you through a tough time! I'm so curious what character and how it helped.

as an adult I know it was less than healthy but it helped in a lot of ways and stopped me from the downward spiral one particular incident caused.

probably going to get laughed at but the character in question was Knuckles the Echidna. I drew strength from knowing he was able to handle being alone and isolated and was strong in ways I wasn’t. I was able to keep a stiff upper lip around my bullies because I saw him standing up to people that sought to cause problems for him and what he protected. Even now I’m able to handle being alone because of this and don’t mind having few friends I don’t see too often.

AYRT

That is actually really sweet. I'm glad you had something like that to help you out!

Honestly, Knuckles is a really good choice for that! And even if it's not healthy to like... 'become' a character at the expense of being your own self 24/7, I think it IS healthy to have characters who are strong in the face of problems like the ones you face, and to say 'hey, if X could survive this, I can survive this'. And if you sometimes have to play pretend a while to get through the hard times, that's not at all a bad thing.

Coping mechanisms only become unhealthy when we cling to them past the point that they help us.

I did, too. More in middle school for me, but I still used that character's traits to hide my personality in high school and be perceive as stronger and "more normal".
Now that I'm an adult and I'm in therapy I discovered that my sense of ego is extremely fragile due to bullying and neglectful family and that's why I change my personality a lot. ☆The more you know☆
