Hormone therapy has been used to treat cis people for a long time, so there actually is a lot of research available. Including hormone therapy for children--puberty blockers have historically been used to treat precocious puberty, and that's pretty much the extent of hormone treatment given to children, despite what the nonstop rumor mills say.
