I think we've all just been around too long

(Anonymous) 2023-06-17 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people just have had so many discussions it's like they've run out of things to talk about, or it feels like the same thing over and over and over so they just skip to the end and move on. Or they're so jaded by so many arguments and trolls that they reply with automatic defensiveness and anger.

So yeah, I agree. People often no longer have the talent for actual conversations online and I too miss it.

Oddly, I've actually had longer and more productive online conversations in the last three years. I admit the majority of them do not revolve around fandom. Fandom conversations have been a bit more mixed, at least here.

I've seen a lot of the knee jerk defensiveness and anger. I get it, I do. A lot of us have had exhausting, repetitive conversations with people and some of them are arguing in bad faith, etc. But when that happens, it's our responsibility to step away and take a break. It's not letting the other side win, it's so you don't become this bitter underbridge-dweller who snaps at everyone indiscriminately while crapping out increasingly unhinged rants about whatever fandom bee has invaded your bonnet lately.

I don't want to be all, "maybe you should touch some grass" but... you know, it wouldn't hurt, if you can manage it. It doesn't have to be nature, just close your laptop, put down your phone, step away from your desk and take a half dozen or so deep breaths. Remind yourself that it's only fandom.
