audiobooks or podcasts

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
So I have a 10hour (fingers crossed that's all it is) solo drive coming up and I thought I'd try out some audiobooks or podcasts. I'm not usually a listener as my attention span wanders when I've tried them previously but I thought a drive would be a good way to try again.

Any topic or genre! Just as long as you found it super engaging the best of the best "even people who don't like audiobooks/podcasts would be into this" type of thing.

I find 372 pages we'll never get back hilarious. It's done by Mike Nelson and another guy and it's basically MST3K/Rifftrax only for books instead of movies, and you don't even have to have read the books.

World War Z. Get the unabridged version. Tons of voice actors (Alan Alda, Frank Darabont, Mark Hamill, Nathan Fillion, Maz Jobrani, Alfred Molina, Kal Penn, Simon Pegg, Rob Reiner, Henry Rollins, Martin Scorsese, John Turturro). And since it is a collection of interviews from different people, it is okay if you zone out for one. Plus, it is just an amazing audio production.

I also listen to a ton of podcasts but I'd need to know what you are interested in.

I'm honestly not sure where my interests will lie with podcasts. I do listen to NPR on drives and enjoy it - Wait Wait Don't Tell Me..., Radiolab, Hidden Brain are all fun. I think I'd enjoy history podcasts if they're told in an engaging way. In general I like nature and science. Not too into depressing stuff or gore or too much true crime.

My mom and I used to take road trips regularly pre-covid and we listened to a lot of audiobooks, but the big stand out was the last trip - I bought stand up comedy by Dara Ó Briain and my mom could Not Get Enough. I actually had to tell HER to turn it down.

If you like history podcasts, Lions Led By Donkeys and Dan Carlin's Hardcore History are both very good.

I like Hardcore History but I would be afraid it would make me fall asleep.

Listening to an ep of Lions Led By Donkeys right now to test it out (Zheng Yi Sao, The Pirate Queen of China). I do enjoy history!

Casefile is imo the best true crime podcast. Tells the crimes as compelling narratives with little to no bias and no extraneous commentary. Most episodes are standalone as well.

If you would like a true crime story that isn't about murder, I would highly recommend their 3 parter episode on the Silk Road darknet drug website. All up it's about 3.5 hours long. The last sequence in the final episode is legitimately edge of your seat stuff.
