It's super hammy. Brando was just kind of a hammy actor. I think it works in Godfather because the character is supposed to be larger than life. And because it's a supporting role (ignoring whatever nonsense the Academy Awards said). It's the same way I feel about his performance in Apocalypse Now basically.

And yeah - WHAT a classic. Totally deserves its reputation.
