It splits people. Some people respond to it by getting in deeper, the ones who make excuses and cover up - they turn into dead-enders and they entrench themselves. Other people do actually face reality and leave, or lose enthusiasm and slowly drift off. So it does make the groups smaller and less powerful, even though at the same time the remaining members become more hardcore and intense in their beliefs.
