I haven't run into this, but it sounds pathetic. Like, the equivalent of assuming that no one would read your fic if they knew what your premise was. And hoping they will if they've already started.

I think the chances of that going the way the author hopes it will are pretty low, simply because people don't like feeling manipulated.
