I haven't run into this, but it sounds pathetic. Like, the equivalent of assuming that no one would read your fic if they knew what your premise was. And hoping they will if they've already started.

I think the chances of that going the way the author hopes it will are pretty low, simply because people don't like feeling manipulated.

I agree that people should definitely tag this, but I also feel for authors who post, like, 50 fics with the same character/pairings and the same character is always trans in every fic having to be sure they tag the trans character every single time. Like, at some point, it would be convenient to just be like "[Character] is always trans in my fics okay?!" and not have to make sure it's added to each and every fic, but you never know when someone is stumbling across your fic for the first time so that won't work. But it's hard to remember to consistently tag, IMO!

It's ... not that hard to remember to consistently tag if the thing you tag is something that changes something pretty essential about one of the main characters in your fic.

But unless it's a small fandom where people already know all the authors (and what they like to write), most readers would not realise that the author has written 50 fics like that before once they found the first fic by them? Sure, if they check the other works afterwards or the author posts 50 fics in a row in just one fandom, but I think that's pretty rare?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-30 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's assuming a lot on behalf of the reader.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
If someone is already tagging for characters and relationships, how difficult is it really to add a 'Trans [Character]' tag? When posting a story, adding another tag takes a few seconds.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This only works if the reader is following the author, not when it's found in the wild when people are looking for fic thought the ship/fandom tag.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-30 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you! My fandoms usually tag but every surprise change make me want to bite people. (I block them instead)

(Anonymous) 2023-06-30 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This is unpleasant to the eyes.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-30 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to comment the same. I mean, the stroke tool in Photoshop is right there.

I immediately thought of this anon from June 22: https://imgur.com/aVz0Xm2

(Yes, I was willing to click back through the entire month to find this. Glad I only had to go ~1 week)

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Agree, anon. Some days I am in the mood to read non-canon-compliant. Most days I am not so I wish people would TAG IT.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, agreed. Do those people not realize that for actual trans people, running across surprise!trans character fic can legitimately ruin their day if it triggers their dysphoria?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
ime no, they genuinely don't. which is odd, given how terminally online a lot of fandom is, and how many transfolks are in their online personal orbit...it strikes me as uncomfortably weird. they probably are internet-friends with how many trans people and yet never give a thought about how we might take their hot-take fics? they don't. and it's unpleasant to wonder why they don't talk to us before spouting off about headcanons in the "so and so is trans I don't make the rules." you can't be an ally by willfully ignoring the pain caused to the people you're supposedly allied with.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kinda weird how you're implying the people who do this aren't also mostly trans. The real problem is that they aren't aware that not everyone else's trans experience is like theirs. For some people, it's empowering to toss their identity onto every character they feel like and tell everyone else about it. This is shitty closed-minded behavior, but you're doing the same thing in the other direction by implying that none of the people doing it are trans because every real trans person's experience is to be triggered by such behavior.

DA

So much this.

Though, to be fair, I've seen this in a lot of communities where a fraction of it thinks it represents what everyone in their group thinks and feels, for various reasons.

I've lost count of how many times I've seen survivors of sexual abuse in fandom pick a fight with someone who they assume is an evil rapist writing rape "for titillation" or "to glorify it," and heap abuse on another survivor who writes rapefics. I think everyone has a right to write dark themes, regardless of what they've experienced. Living in a culture where rape exists means a lot of people think about it and have feelings, and want to grapple with them at the safe remove of "I'm sort of in control and it's not happening to me right now." But the crusading seems to overwhelmingly involve survivors attacking more-stigmatized survivors.

This is one of the reasons why I skim ahead in fics. It's also why I check bookmarks - to see if there are relevant details about this.

It's a lose-lose scenario, since people who want to find this content won't be able to do that. Someone's missing out on their dream fic.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 08:17 am (UTC)(link)

Yes! Thank you! I've been wanting to make a secret like this myself. There are characters in a certain fandom that I want to read about, but they are surprise trans in so many fics; I don't even attempt to look for any anymore. I once saw one vaguely tagged as "Alternate character interpretation" — which doesn't cut it imo. Just tag the fic properly.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. And what's really obnoxious is when they're gender non-conforming, and that's the exact reason umpteen people thought it would just "make more sense" if this boy was a girl or vice versa. It's very wearisome if you liked the character without feeling compelled to remove the percieved discrepancy between their personality and the stereotype for their gender. Feminine men don't need to believe they're women, for goodness sake! And masculine women neither. They can be so hot just the way they are. And we already get too few characters that own that comfortably, so when fandom messes with it, I just feel like flipping tables.

I don't mind it too much, but I get annoyed by other people's behalf. The funny thing is, I also see a lot of posts mourning the fact that they can't find Trans!Character fics... I wonder if there is a correlation here.
