I was born and raised in Oklahoma. GTFO as soon as I could, though the rest of my family still lives there. If you're sick of Texas, you won't find anything much different in Oklahoma. Except maybe the power grid.

Do you have any specific questions? I've only lived in Tulsa and the surrounding suburbs, so if you want to know specifics about OKC, I can't help you there.

I don't know, honestly. I'd rather move back up north, but mom won't go for that. We've just started the conversation. She wants to be closer to family. I just want to be out of Texas. There do seem to be immigration attorney jobs there, and I can transfer my bar license there without too much trouble.

I agree with the poster above that there is less economic opportunity than Texas, but if you can get a job then it's basically Texas' hat. There are less POC than Texas, due to being further from the border (not counting natives on the res), but just as much racism. Depending on where you live in Texas and where you'd move to in OK, it may be a bit cheaper to live in OK, but not by much. No good public transit, so even in the cities you need a car. So long as you pass as straight white christian the people will be vaguely nice. It may be just because I spent my teen years in a suburb of Tulsa and not the city proper, but the only real non-school/work social outlet was church, which was not fun for young atheist me. I've been gone long enough that I can't say if the social situation has gotten any better.

New Mexico's fairly nice! Pretty solidly blue, queer and trans-friendly, protects abortion rights. Rents aren't too bad except in the Santa Fe/Taos area. And I would imagine there are jobs for immigration attorneys.

I don't know where the family you want to be closer to is, but I'd pick New Mexico or Colorado over OK.

If you're trying to head East and your mom's determined to avoid "North," then it's all pretty dire until you hit Tennessee. (And if you settle in Tennessee, Choose Wisely.)

The family is in a small down but about an hour or two from Oklahoma City. I'd love to move to Colorado, but don't think my mother would agree.

some very close friends of mine have family who moved pretty much in that area range. they have turned harcore maga asshat white supremicist kill the gays ever since, said friends have actually cut contact. that area of Oklahoma is overwhelmingly christo-fascist. I know it's going to be hard talking your mom out of it but that part of Oklahoma is not in any way better than being in Texas.

it's hard these days, especially if sane family members can't move out of the scary places they are, but if that were my option I'd make any excuse, up to and including pretend job opportunities, to suggest that it's not a good idea and let's maybe go somewhere else. I support getting the fuck outta Texas but Oklahoma is basically the fire to the frying pan.

I think the idea would be we'd move to OKC because we're definitely city people. But everything here has definitely given me pause and I'm going to try to talk her into somewhere else. She really wants to be closer to family given my sister is about to move to New Jersey.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why can't you just move north yourself and let your mom go wherever she wants by herself?

I can't afford it. She couldn't live on her own. We need each other.

NAYRT--you could get a roommate or roommates someplace you'd actually like, and she could move in with family?

It isn't that easy to find a job in my field. A lot of it is word of mouth and knowing people. It took me years to find a full time job here as it is.

AYRT—that'd be true regardless of your living with your mom or not, I guess unless you and your mom both moved in with family, and sorry, but from what you've posted before that sounds like hell for you.

Good luck, I hope you find a living situation you actually like. And at least convince your mom to head to NM or CO or something.
